It's interesting that they strike me as creepy (that's a more accurate adjective than "weird"), while obviously there must be a lot of other people who aren't affected that way. Not at all sure what that says about me.

Hmm. We have certainly seen establishment Democrats react in this way. But there may be some truth to the idea that this emphasis on ideological purity is more common among progressives.
