Tweety Bird

(I was saving this for the 20th, but given tonight's Address, this seems a good time.)

  1. Good one, Alan. I know my TV won't be on at 9 p.m. tonight.

  2. BTW,Susan---did you notice that Mr. Pence was sent the other day to negotiate with congressional staffers rather than members of Congress about the shutdown? On top of being forbidden to discuss any particulars [read: money]? That is obviously a huge, probably unprecedented, demotion for the President Pro Tem of the Senate. But the spineless fellow swallowed it.

P.S.: I expect it will be covered to some extent by the NHK world news tomorrow, which will be on behind my back at breakfast. "Trump Daitoryo wa..." [President Trump...] has become one of their most common phrases.

    1. "it will be covered" should read "Trump's pressser will be covered"

Kenya burial site shows community spirit of herders 5,000 years ago [Click] Not “new news,” but worth continuing reflection IMO.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is right. A 70% tax on the rich[est] makes sense [Click] When I was young the top marginal tax rate was 90%; but of course no one paid that. By investment in municipal bonds [i.e., funding infrastructure] the wealthy could reduce their taxes, make a decent return, and lower general taxes for public goods. It worked well then (when them radical lefty New Dealers were calling the shots), and it could work well now.

  4. I received an e-mail from the Warren campaign just now. I noticed particularly the fact that the photos show her back and the faces of attendees at her appearances. I note also that, like Bernie, she uses the personal pronoun "we" very frequently.

    1. I'm getting the impression that Warren is the DNC's darling this co-round. At least no one is putting out negative newsbits about her. Seems the Bernie thing is being mentioned at every newscast this week. He's a good person who has been out there every day since the last election working hard for the people. But they dismiss him over something he didn't do, when he was twice as busy campaigning. Some of his junior staff screwed up, and it's on his head. Interesting that it wasn't mentioned until now. I really hate politics.

  5. In my opinion the networks caving to Cheetolini when they refused to broadcast President Obama simply says to me, "Yes, we *are* fake news."

  6. Today’s newsbits re Mueller investigation(s):

Supreme Court Won’t Intervene In Mystery Subpoena [Click] Hmmmm…a foreign government owned financial institution? How many of those could there be? It wouldn’t be Deutsche Bank. A Russian bank, maybe? I find that there are a lot of government-owned banks in India. I find quite a few more in a list of Banks in the Americas. So I guess it doesn’t narrow things down very much. But we will find out in time.

Manafort’s attorney is a technological ignoramus who hasn’t paid attention to the news. [Click] I could be mistaken, but as memory serves me, Manafort himself made this same amateurish mistake. Certainly other prominent people with big legal problems have done it.

    1. Manafort's lawyers putting out a redacted document that can easily be un-redacted ~ revealing that Manfort did a treasonous deed! ~ has had me giggling all evening.

  7. Canada: truck driver in hockey bus crash that killed 16 pleads guilty [Click] It seems to me to be about the most decent thing to do under the circumstances. But to estimate from the skid marks, the bus (which clearly hit the truck) must have been going VERY fast—the momenta of the very big truck and the bus were roughly the same.

  8. Update: According to the lady at the credit union, one deposit was made on December 28 and the other on January 2, to the correct accounts. I am mightily confused as to where all that money went. But, at least it got to where it was going when it was supposed to get there. Phew!

    1. Well, Sis helped me and we found out where the money went. I paid my credit card bill early, and now don't owe anything till next month. What an idiot! But at least everything is sorted out.

  9. Some months ago, we were looking at our internet "bundle" and discovered that we were paying something like $100 a month for cable/TV channels we weren't really watching. So we kept internet and got rid of our cable package. Times like tonight, that seems like a particularly good choice...

    1. Well done, Renee and D !

So, is anyone here planning to watch the mess-tivities tonight? We could have a drinking game with the word "crisis." (I'm drinking iced decaf. Otherwise I might miss the Dem response, as I'd be under the table before they begin to speak.)

  10. Wow, what a string of lies! I'm looking forward to the fact-checkers. It was pretty much pre-fact-checked by CNN in the last couple of hours, so having just heard the truth, the lies are extremely obvious.

DT seems to need new glasses, as he keep squinting as he reads.

  12. I wasn't inspired by either argument. But the fact checkers didn't find anything amiss with what the Dems said.

  13. ROFL! The CNN WH Correspondent says DT's speech should have come with a Surgeon General's warning that it is hazardous to the truth...!
