Nonsensitive Mueller investigation files leaked from Russia [Click] They had been provided as discovery to a Russian defendant company. The leak is being used as an argument against granting the defendant significant discovery.

  2. Colombia’s Radical Plan to Welcome Millions of Venezuelan Migrants [Click] Decency and practicality combined; most welcome. Having a common language certainly helps. Certainly a rational US foreign policy would be to help—in partnership with Cuba, it seems to me.

  3. Opioids: Boston trial opens what could be year of reckoning for executives [Click] This seems to be an important precedent. If, as alleged, there was a kickback scheme, it could be bad news for a lot of physicians, too.

  4. Harris Courts Hollywood, Plans Big-Ticket Fundraisers [Click] Oh, God—how absolutely typical of establishment Democratic politicians. They show up in Hollywood for a multi-kilobuck per plate fundraiser, then fly off to Palo Alto or thereabouts for another (the same day if possible), then go back east. They whine “It’s so expensive to campaign in California,” but Bernie could do it, and drew record crowds. If they have enough money to campaign in Iowa, they have enough money to campaign in California—they simply can’t be bothered. I’ve been on the lookout for some indication that Warren is preparing to campaign in California, but so far there is no sign. OK, it’s early.

  5. Current temperature 2 below. Predictions are that temperatures will rise slowly throughout the day (accompanied by snow starting late afternoon) and will be above zero by midnight. Predicted highs in the 50s by Sunday.

    1. Well, now, that sounds a lot more reasonable. Listen for the collective sigh of relief when temps go above 32ºF.

  6. We made it down to -4.5ºF last night. Felt like -25ºF. But we feel warm next to Chicago, especially as we have all the gear and we've been getting used to it slowly for months.

    1. I imagine this intense cold is helping midwesterners understand why here in the Northeast we are capable and independent while also being quick to stop and help someone on the side of the road. Recently, a car got stuck in a snowbank near an intersection. Immediately, the three cars behind it pulled over and the drivers jumped out and pushed the guy's car back onto the road, and they all continued on.

  7. Maybe it's appropriate for a small state with strong democratic traditions. It ought to keep the powers of the administration and the legislature well balanced, and if someone unsatisfactory should be elected, s/he can be changed out pretty easily.

  8. When I was growing up in Arkansas, we had 2-yr terms for governor. With an almost iron-clad tradition that each governor served exactly two terms. Faubus broke that tradition, which was the first step toward establishing actual political parties in the state.

  9. From The Hill's FB page:

Republicans are hoping that President Trump will stop tweeting and stay out of negotiations with Democrats to prevent a second government shutdown, saying it would be "more worthwhile and effective" if he joined negotiations once a deal is closer.

President Trump's acting EPA chief Andrew Wheeler put eight new members on the agency's Science Advisory Board, including an outspoken skeptic of climate change science and a scholar from a group funded in part by billionaire Charles Koch.

President Trump said he and his top intelligence officials are "very much in agreement" on Iran, ISIS and other topics, hours after saying he disagreed with them on key topics and that "Time will prove me right, probably."

Aside: Nothing I have seen has shaken my conviction that he doesn't lie; he opens his mouth and waits to hear what comes out. None of what does come out has any connection with each other or with the world around him.

  10. I received my voter information pamphlet for the March 5th election today. The only race in my area is for county supervisor, and it didn't take long to figure out for whom to vote. The notice says I should receive my ballot by Feb. 11th.

    1. That's all well and good, but I'm beginning to lose patience. Hurry up and indict Fart already! Yes, I know that's unreasonable, but I'm really getting ants in my pants. Congress, impeach him; Senate, convict him; Muler, indict him and the warden at Leavenworth, welcome him to his new and forever home so we can get on with cleaning up and repairing our torn and tattered nation!
