  1. I'm heading to bed late and getting up late, deliberately, so that I can be at my best in the evening as I work at the polls (5:00pm to we're all done) and stay awake until returns are in...! Then I'll sleep late on Wednesday and spend the day planting Spring bulbs and putting the last of the gardens to bed for Winter.

CNN Election Results will be tallied here:

  2. ALLY UPDATE!
NOTE: Ally will turn 12 in late January

    Ally’s Mom writes:

We made another trip to NYC this past week. Medically Ally had a "light" schedule. We had a blood draw in the morning, and then a meeting with her long term follow up care doctor. This doctor is pleased with Ally's growth and weight gain. She follows her own growing curve, but she is still making progress on it. In the afternoon we walked to another building and Ally completed her neurological testing. The doctor that completed this testing was very impressed with Ally. There was one test, in particular, that he made sure to mention to us, that he couldn't remember any other kid scoring so highly on. We will have a phone conference with him at some point in the future to go over test results. On our walk back from that appointment her long term follow up care doctor called us. One of her hormone levels is elevated, indicating that her ovaries are damaged. They want us back in February to do more testing and see if we need to start some medication that will "trick" her body into thinking it is going through puberty. We knew this was coming, and this latest blood test tells us it is time to start dealing with it. We managed to get the appointment for February vacation, and are hoping to add some fun things to that trip.
On a fun note we got to see the world premier of the new Grinch movie, and meet Benedict Cumberbatch (the voice of the Grinch, aka Dr. Strange, aka Sherlock (from the PBS show)). It was AWESOME!!! He was so nice. We also got to see the Broadway show, School of Rock. Ally LOVED it! It was a great experience.
Thanks for sticking with us all of these years!

    1. Nearly twelve years old? My goodness!

One thing puzzles me. Trick her body into thinking she is going through puberty? At her age, she is or very soon will be. Why assault her body with medication to mimic what already is or very soon will be happening anyway in the normal course of things? Even if for some reason she starts menstruating later rather than earlier, introducing medication still doesn't make sense to me on the face of it. Surely, the poor child's system has suffered enough assaults?

    2. The key phrase is: "her ovaries are damaged." Chemo did that. It means her body can't do what it would need to do. She has SUCH specialised care in NYC, and it saved her life. I trust those doctors to be on top of what's needed. It's sad that there are ANY hangover issues...from dental problems to this. But she is gaining and healthy and that is ASTOUNDINGLY good news...!

  3. It’s the big day! I sooo want to be home watching returns tonight, but will be counting the Vote. Below is a “what to watch” article. I hope folks will post updates here. My phone will be off (doesn’t work inside the polling place), but I’ll be checking during breaks!!
    Hoping for good results!!!

  5. What Lawsuit to Gut Obamacare? Oh, That One. [Click] While Republican candidates were claiming they would protect coverage for pre-existing conditions, they were suing to end it.

    1. If their attempt to completely destroy the ACA succeeds, their ass should be grass in 2020. And then the only practical solution is Medicare For All. Paid for by removing the income cap for contributions. The rule changes the GOP made in the House and Senate so they could ram through tax cuts for the rich and ideological judges should work just fine for what the people will insist on. IMO.

  6. So I voted. Then got my hair cut. (Too short. Some Great Clips hair cutters seem to have trouble listening to what I say. But I don't know of a better choice within convenient walking distance.) Now time for a nap.

  7. You know, Bill, that reminds me why I don't go to hairdressers any more. The last time I went I said I wanted bangs and a casual easy style. Well, she whipped and she combed and she sprayed and I ended up looking like I had an artichoke on my head. No bangs, big sweeping waves and LOTS OF HAIRSPRAY. My youngest son said that when I came home the only thing that kept him from bursting into laughter was the look of absolute fury and disgust on my face. I marched straight upstairs and poured water over that monstrosity and made it halfway human-looking again. And *that* was the last time I trusted somebody else with my hair!

  8. My first wedding day. Salon owner. Asked for a "trim"--first cut was 4 inches, blunt cut on top of my head. Tiny rollers. Went home and brushed and brushed, but couldn't wet it cause I knew what was under the too tight curls. Got married. First thing I did when we reached Miami was to get a real haircut, even before checking in. Took me another decade to learn to cut my own hair.

  9. Girl who cut it said--so you tried to do it yourself? I said, If I were blind and used poultry shears, I could have done a better job than *this*. . . .

    1. All of which confirms my inclination to take the office scissors to my mop. Whenever I say to a hair dresser that I want something very simple and easy to handle, I end up with some hip style I can't manage on my own. They don't seem to understand "I don't see very well" or "My hands don't work very well." So I end up with something that looks great as soon as I come out from under the hair dresser's hands and looks awful for months until it's long and scraggy enough for me to go back. What's so hard to understand in the phrase "a nice, simple bob?"

"Georgia Secretary of State and GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp had problems with his voter ID when he went to cast his ballot on Election Day.

“It turns out his voting card was invalid,” a reporter with Atlanta’s WSB-TV revealed in a video report on Kemp’s issues voting at his polling place in Winterville, Georgia."

"The ABC affiliate did not explain what the issue with the GOP candidate’s identification was and added that Kemp was eventually able to cast his ballot."

  11. Polls have been closed 20 minutes and they're already calling Pritzker (Democrat) Illinois' new governor. One gubernatorial mansion flipped. Not unexpected, but I expected it to be closer. And Fox News mentioned that Pritzker will be the richest governor in US history.

  21. Got home from the polls around 10pm and have been trying to play catchup ever since. Wild night, and Susan definitely captured the effect it's having on me...! I soooooooooo wanted the Senate to flip!!! I'm comforted that at least Bernie got Firsties! They called it for Bernie just as our polls closed! But by then I already knew he was in with the usual landslide here in Vermont, because for an hour I had been visually scanning ballots to pull out the write-in votes and I glanced at the Senate, House and Governor races much of the time, as I did so. Bernie and Peter Welch did best. And our current Republican Governor won again. I had a feeling it would go that way. I didn't vote for him, but at least he got us really great gun legislation, and bucked the NRA and his Party to do it.

Heartbreaking about Beto and Gillum. =SIGH=

  22. Of 4200 registered voters, 3902 voted, which comes to about 69.8% voter turnout. It's phenomenal for a mid-term election, though we have done better in a Presidential election. 42 voters registered today.

I would have been home earlier but that a person who is new to write in tallying decided to do the tally his own way and wouldn't listen to those of us who have been there 14+ years and more. (Republican.) So, in the end, we had to completely throw out his tallies and start over. Grrrrr. That made a long night for everyone, from our Town Clerk who got up at 5:00am to the school custodian who was waiting for us to leave so he could clean and go home.

  23. 9:25 PM 20% of California precincts partially reporting. No more than a vague idea of how things might turn out. Can't say about Andrew Janz at this point.

    ReplyDelete

    1. 10:40 PM Still can't say about Janz/Nunes; no precincts reporting in the Tulare County portion of the district, not clear that there are any precincts completely reporting in Fresno County. At first glance it looks like Nunes won, but on closer examination it seems questionable.

  24. We had some beautiful wins tonight, but also some heartbreaking losses. Sadly for Ohio we got bootlicker old guy Mike DeWine as our Governor. Disgusting. Almost all the Republicans won here, Jim Jordan, the sex abuse enabler and Mike Turner who NEVER holds a town hall or speaks to anyone who isn't republican. Secretary of State win is a Republican which means we can look forward to more voter suppression. It's embarrassing to live in a state with so many bone-stupid people in it.

  25. Illinois update: Democrats swept all statewide races. In the interesting congressional races the Tribune is reporting too few votes to matter. And I note that in many cases the vote totals and the reported percentages don't match. So I guess we won't know about those races until tomorrow.

    1. Actually they have just updated their figures. I also checked the Sun-Times, which shows the number of precincts reporting and total number of precincts. Democrats flipped two Republican seats in the Chicago suburbs/exurbs but fell just short in the two downstate districts they were contesting.
