  1. Susan, note for you on the last thread.

  2. Pretty scary time for folks along the coast!

Dear friends of mine just south of Raleigh are plenty concerned. He has to stay as he’s a police officer, and she would like to evacuate, but isn’t sure which way to go! 95 will be at a crawl and with gas in short supply. She’d go west to her brother’s, but they’re expecting flooding issues too.
In which direction would you head? SW?

  3. I got back from NW Washington last night; I was unable to post, but could follow politicalwire.com easily on my old Kindle--whatabuncha news in the political news! The weather in NW WA was like home for me--probably too cool for my sweetie, but a blast out of the past for me. (Don't get me wrong--I don't miss the mildewed shoes.) Not much rain--some in Seattle Sunday evening when returning from the Sacred Harp singing, but I got along OK without raincoat or umbrella. (I'm nowhere near sweet enough to melt in a little rain; a torrential downpour, maybe.) I met about five or six times as many close relatives as I have had for some years, and easily three times as many as I have ever had--too many to shake a stick at. Had a really sweet encounter with my elderly uncle; his son was trying hard to get his attention for a while, telling him who I was and that I was there; then I stepped up, took his hand and introduced myself; a tear ran down his cheek and he said "Very pleased to meet you." His daughter wept a bit--she said he hadn't spoken in three months. So that went well. The home of the daughter and her husband (and kids, of course!) reminded me of the Weasleys' house, The Burrow, in the Harry Potter movies (particularly because of the surroundings and the social warmth inside) which I told her; she said she took that as a compliment (which was what was intended). The cousin who is my principal contact took a couple of photos of me and my Uncle in profile, and I was taken aback--I had NO idea that was what my nose looked like! Quite a beak/schnoz/honker! And just like that of my newly discovered uncle and quite a few others in the herd of relatives--most notably the males, and particularly the older ones. When I showed the best depiction of it to my sweetie, she laughed out loud! (Which WAS appropriate.)

The Sacred Harp singing Sunday evening was great music, but with only 12-14 participants it was way too loud for my old ears. My right ear still hurts a bit, but I am pretty sure it will be OK in time. I should have left after no more than an hour, but fool that I was, I couldn't bring myself to be so impolite. There was only one way to know.

My Monday morning flight from Seattle to Fresno was cancelled, but they got me home the same day, routing me through San Diego, then, after a very long layover, to Fresno. I tested the local 75% discount taxi coupons, and they worked just fine; the first two taxis at the airport taxi stand didn't take them, but called a taxi that did. Oh, and in Seattle the golden agers rate on the light rail was only one dollar. One oddity was in the tunnels running under the streets in the downtown area--in addition to the light rail cars, they accommodated big articulated buses.

I didn't get my replacement cell phone in time to take it on the trip, but took Miyoko's, which had coverage and the battery problems--I couldn't locate the charger that fit into the wall socket before I left (or since I returned, either). But it lasted just long enough. The replacement phone was waiting for me, but was not at all what had been promised or what I wanted. But it served to keep my account functional, and I ordered one I like just a while ago. It is far and away the most expensive phone I have ever purchased, but it should last a long time--4G LTE, Verizon compatible. It has more things I don't need, but that's the way things go.

Got most things caught up so far, only my art class homework left to do.

    1. Sounds like a good trip. I'm interested to know what phone they actually sent and what one you ordered. I'm still working out the details on the phone I got a month ago. Just figured out how to get it to show up on my on-line account.

    2. Bill--They said they were going to send an LG 237C feature phone; what I received was an LG REBEL LTE smartphone. I finally got through to a Tracfone rep who told me it was already linked to my account, and I have three weeks left on my current subscription. He also told me any Verizon-compatible phone would work just fine on Tracfone. I had figured out that of the available semi-feature phones available at Verizon, the LG EXALT LTE was the closest to what I wanted, and would be compatible with Verizon's 4G LTE system, which it is changing over to 100% some time next year. As a double check I found one on eBay that showed a photo of the box with the ID number; went to Tracfone's "Bring Your Own Phone" page, entered the ID and was informed it would work just fine. Verizon wouldn't sell me one without a minimum $30/month plan; Tracfone costs six or seven dollars per month for more minutes than I can use (for just phone calls). The new LG can be a hot spot, can connect via WiFi (not sure if that costs the user money), and has a camera (at which some reviewers turn up their noses). No flashlight, though. Hmmmmm....better order a Tracfone SIM. Will think about a memory module for photos, but that can wait.

    3. Pardon my language, but Jesus H. Christ on a crutch! That LG Rebel is precisely the phone they tried to send me as a replacement for the LG Stylo 3 I'd ordered that wouldn't connect when it arrived. But I raised a stink and managed to get them to take it back and eventually send me the right phone. After a total of 3 months from my original order.

It looks like the Stylo 3 has about the same features as your Exalt. I chose it because, at 5.7", it had the largest screen of any phone I could find.

But yes, even with a smartphone plan the cost comes to about $11/month (with taxes) for more minutes, texts, and data than I will ever use.

    4. They must have an overabundance of LG Rebel phones... At least they didn't charge me for it. I think the Exalt LTE comes with 8 GB of memory; I have no idea if that is a lot or a little for the occasional photo, but it can be user-upgraded to 32 GB. Now if only I could figure out how to block incoming text messages...
After going through several reps at Tracfone who didn't know what they were doing, I finally connected today with one who did. It was refreshing. As I recall, it didn't used to be that way.

    5. Yeah, I also encountered a number that didn't know what they were talking about. Sometimes had to go up to the third level to find one that did. And even they didn't seem to realize that it would be weeks before anything actually shipped.

  4. Edwin said he was amazed/astonished/taken aback when he visited his relatives in Norway, and discovered a whole village full of people wearing what he'd always assumed was his very unique nose. . . .

    1. I had noticed those family noses as I was meeting my "new" relatives--but was astonished to learn that I had one too! “O wad some Power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us!" Well, it seems the camera is the giftie, at least for physical things.

  5. Very very hard to see ourselves in profile. I learned to when I learned how to cut my own hair, but it can get complicated. Cameras are indeed easier.
