  1. Lordy, what a mess! [Click] The rules for the Kansas gubernatorial primary require a recount to be requested before the votes must be counted and certified. The party requesting has to pony up the money for the recount, too; if they win, the deposit is refunded. It is so close that I can imagine both the leading candidates asking for recounts. Oh, and they can ask for recounts on a county-by-county basis, too. And they get a choice between optical re-scanning of the ballots or having them recounted by hand. No automatic recount no matter how close the tally.

    1. Not to worry. There are plenty of benefactors on both sides who would pony up for a recount. There ought to be funds available for it. But the truth is that many towns and counties just don't have it.

  2. There ought to be a law--and there is!
    This legal tactic can keep neo-Nazi protests out of your city [Click] Most states already have laws that rein in armed groups. Officials should use them.

    1. What a great article, Alan! We all need to print it out and keep it in our glove compartments with key elements circled. And we need to research the laws in our state and print those out as well! Presenting them if needed could solve something before it turns badly.

  3. Our government is now officially INSANE.

    American citizens legally adopted a child in Peru. They returned to the USA and now their 4 year old daughter stands in danger of being deported.

    1. Did I mention that the child was 11 days old when they began to care for her?

    2. "The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
      It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
      Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
      It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
      'T is mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
      The throned monarch better than his crown;
      His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
      The attribute to awe and majesty,
      Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
      But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
      It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
      It is an attribute to God himself;
      And earthly power doth then show likest God's,
      When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
      Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
      That in the course of justice none of us
      Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
      And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
      The deeds of mercy."

    3. It was foolish of the parents to bring the girl in on a visitor's visa. But still.

    4. Very fitting quote!

      Alan...remember that they are American citizens!

    5. But the child is not a citizen, and they didn't get a resident alien visa (green card) for her. By their own admission, she is not their natural daughter, so is not a birthright citizen. Perhaps they could have obtained a passport for her at the US Consulate in Peru, or some alternative documentation. I'm not sure how it would have best been handled, but they should have investigated it first. My wife could have entered the US on a spousal visa, but I knew that was asking for trouble, so we were married in Tokyo under both US (at the US Consulate) and Japanese (at the ward office) laws, then she obtained a US permanent resident alien visa, so there were no entry or residence problems. The way these folks handled it makes it look like child smuggling. Legal aspects of overseas adoptions are very complicated.

  4. Grassroots Upheaval Shaking Maryland Democrats [Click] “A grass-roots upheaval in Maryland’s Democratic Party has made it an unexpected showcase for national efforts by liberal activists and unions seeking to revitalize the party and push it to the left,” the Washington Post reports.

    “Primary victories by progressives in three premier races — governor and county executive in Montgomery and Baltimore counties — have created a prominent testing ground for a new brand of Democratic politics, featuring ambitious and potentially expensive policy proposals and greater outreach to the working class.”

    “Fueled by anger at President Trump and a sense that Democrats have lost touch with their base, the insurgency is stirring strife within the party, with some moderates already abandoning ship.”
