The View from the Inn at Shelburne Farms

  1. Democratic Women Keep Winning[Click] “… The trend shows no signs of abating…”

Many of the women who have emerged from contested primaries thus far have, like Porter, run against male candidates supported by local or national power brokers… Amy McGrath, in Kentucky, and Kara Eastman, in Nebraska, beat male congressional candidates supported by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

Organizations like the DCCC tend to prefer candidates with political experience–which may incline them against rookies like McGrath–or those who are independently wealthy, a group dominated by businessmen… Some female candidates say it’s unfair that the political experience they’ve worked to build gets called a negative. “Now, men say, ‘Well, you have a great résumé, but you’re kind of an insider,'” Mills, the Maine gubernatorial candidate, told a campaign rally. “Really? For decades, men were telling women, ‘Just a little more experience and you’ll be qualified.’ Well, goddamn it, I am qualified!”

Boy, does that ring a bell—it sure happens to men, too. And those men will be very receptive to the argument.

  3. I swear I can't read Facebook for more than five minutes at a time without going into an incandescent rage! What the hell is wrong with Congress? Where are our "checks and balances". Why aren't we already in the streets everywhere?

  4. We the People aren't in the streets because folks don't believe it will make a difference. DT is so completely nuts that he might even retaliate. Those who care (like Bernie) already care and the others are too weak to speak. It kills me that we can't shoehorn Congress into doing something sane, and that we can't change Congress until November (January, really). Our government is badly broken!!

Keep calling and keep lighting fires under people who have responsibility.

  6. In their infinite foolishness, the FDA now wants to label pure maple syrup and honey has having "added sugars." Anyone else think it's being run by people who have stock in Mrs. Butterworth's?

We have until Friday the 15th to make comments on the FDA site. Here's mine:

"I live in Vermont and have made maple syrup on a cookstove. I assure you nothing gets added to maple sap in the process. In fact, all that happens is the water in the sap boils out, leaving behind pure maple syrup. There is only the one ingredient, so how can anything be termed "added"? What would it be added to?!! I must ask the same in behalf of honey! What do you imagine is added to honey?? Is your designation ignorance or agenda? Please clarify!

"Come on FDA, be honest. Drop the label that makes you look ridiculous, uninformed and worse. You are giving the impression that you have an agenda of supporting fake sugar syrups over maple syrup and honey. Please show us that you are fair, and leave the labeling clear: "Pure Maple Syrup" or "Raw Unfiltered Honey."

I don't know if only Vermonters can use that site. See what you think.

    1. I think the label category "added sugar" is stupid to begin with. The only thing that matters is total sugar. Whether it's added or there to begin with doesn't matter in the slightest.
