Stone Steps

  2. Are avocados toast? California farmers bet on what we'll be eating in 2050[Click] This is exactly what economists had predicted farmers would do to deal with continuing drought in California.

    1. So sad about the drought!!

Good article, though. Planting with sustainability in mind is vital. Phil*in*Iowa is that kind of farmer....one of the BEST!

    3. Back during the recent drought (5 years?) there was a reputable economic study that figured California would adapt and not suffer much loss of domestic product even in a 70-year drought; farmers would plant crops that used less water, and make better use of what was available. Where they have been forced to do so, they have been conserving more and more. Where water is still abundant they do not unless forced to do so by laws and regulations. It is very obvious in this area.

Re hot weather lowering school performance, that has been well known for some time. Air conditioning is a good part of the answer.

    4. And, of course, air conditioning adds to greenhouse gases.

Interestingly, the author suggested that part of the reason for schools taking Summers off was the heat. Maybe. Up here, it was actually that the farm families needed their kids to help on the farm in the Summer.

    5. While in Arkansas, in the early 20th century when my mother was growing up, kids were mostly needed to chop (weed) cotton in the spring and pick cotton in the fall. She never completed a full year of school in her life.

  3. Susan and all, here's a way to help the kids that have been separated from their parents.

I don't actually believe there is a place called "hell" where people burn for all eternity. I believe that hell is of our own making and is the state one is in who has turned completely away from what is holy and good. But I could entertain the idea of hell being created just to have a place to put DT. Of course, given my theology, I believe he is already in hell, just by having to be who he is and live in his own skin.

    1. Except he doesn't know it, which defeats the purpose.

    2. Most people allegedly make it into purgatory before hell right? That's supposed to be where they see the error of their ways and work off their misdeeds. Going to hell means there's no chance for redemption, as the old theology goes. (Old time theologians didn't have a very good option of God's love.) In this case, however, the premise is that DT is already in hell, so he's way past the point where knowing it would be useful.
