All Hallow's E'en!

  1. BuzzFeed News: “The threat of serving hard time for failing to disclose foreign lobbying work is rattling Washington’s multi-billion dollar influence industry following Monday’s 12-count indictment against Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates.”

They should profit (if not monetarily) from that.--Alan

  2. Prior to the passage of Dodd/Frank financial institutions did not have to open their books except when presented with a subpoena. Which meant that records could only be confirmative of information gotten elsewhere. The obligation to report cash transactions over a certain amount was not able to be monitored, because there was no basis for comparison so validate reports.
Anyway, now that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is set up, banks have to provide regular reports about their accounts and holdings and investigators can spot anomalies, such as strange wire transactions from Cyprus to a lawn care service. Of course, Dodd/Frank was passed as an integral part of the ACA, which is one reason why there has been a consistent effort to repeal the latter. It would not be politic to admit that the real problem is bank regulation. The IRS is still precluded from sharing information with other agencies. The CFPB is not. In getting the CFPB, Barack Obama achieved what he hadn't been able to do with the Community Reinvestment Act, the vehicle relied on by ACORN to get some justice for low income neighborhoods.

    1. Oops-probably not. According to Wikipedia, all parts of the mature plant are poisonous, although immature tubers are edible.

  4. New estimate: power will be restored by 8pm on Nov 4th.

Our next door neighbour got power back yesterday. She offered, so we're going to run a 200' power cord over to her outside outlet. That way we can juice our router and be online again. Best of all, we'll be able to power an actual lightbulb or two!

    1. Outstanding! For that long a run, the heavier the wire the better. 12 gauge ought to do the job. And welcome back!
