One More Year

  1. And Howard was the trailblazer.

I get the impression that Mr. Obama is likely to use his final year in office to indirectly make the case for a Democratic successor. I wonder, given the evolving condition of the GOP, if we might be at the beginning of a series of Democratic presidencies comparable to the run of Republican presidencies that began with Lincoln. Looking at the histories of the Whigs and Democrats in those days seems instructive...

[Click] That looks like a nice warm coat (or jacket?) Bernie is wearing, but he should be wearing a hat for his own good. But these days what sort of hat should a presidential candidate be wearing? A homburg seems dated, but ought to be a better choice than a fedora. I found photos of Gene Debs wearing a homburg.

  3. Getting ready for the bluzzard. UPS arrived with supplies, including lo-carb basil fettuccine. Who could ask for more?

  5. You’re way ahead of me, listener. Here are some items gathered up during my dinner break, and now back to work.—Alan

Fears grow of repeat of 2008 financial crash as investors run for cover [Click] My first thought is that the classical English way of dealing with admirals ought to be applied to bankers—hang the occasional one to encourage the others. (Tip o’ the hat to Voltaire.) My second thought was that this is the sort of barely anticipated event that could suddenly alter the political fortunes of a presidential campaign—or two. Or several.

    1. The Hillary and Iowa link was interesting, Alan. And your thought is also interesting about how the struggling stock market could possibly put the economy at the forefront (instead of foreign affairs), and benefit Bernie. Of course, if things head in that direction one might almost anticipate a foreign relations disaster as the October Surprise.

  6. Back from Boston. A good trip on the whole. Had a good time at the convention and on Monday evening several of us went to Legal Seafood where I had lobster pot pie for the first time. Was glad to miss the absolutely frigid temperatures in Chicago, although the wind chill in Boston Monday night and Tuesday morning -- the only times I was outside the hotel -- was close to zero.

Trying to catch up with email, blog posts, etc. before starting work again tomorrow.

  7. The past couple of weeks I've suddenly been getting fundraising pleas from the Clinton. One of them talked about how Sanders was outspending Clinton in Iowa. And another made the interesting observation that although Clinton was sure she had more supporters a larger fraction of Sanders supporters had stepped up to contribute.
