I'm home. And I am soooooooo tired!!! I worked at the polls from 11am to 2:15pm, then worked at the Library from 3-6:30pm, then counted the vote from 7 to 10pm!!! All on about 6 hours of sleep. Heh.
But it was so much fun!! Some of my favourite moments of the day: I helped a young man whose residency was contested to prove his residency and so be able to vote. I went to the general store to pick up the sandwich and soup lunches for the Election Officials. When the Town Clerk went to eat her lunch, she gave me the key to the vote-intake machine, incase it jammed. I am actually one of the old-timers there now…! Counting the vote was a hoot. We looked at all sides of E.V.E.R.Y. ballot to scan for write-in votes! Among the names of many humans, we had two for Mickey Mouse, two for Matt Dillon (for Sheriff!), and one for Donald Duck. I will see dots and numbers in my sleep, but it was totally worth it!
Rep. Peter Welch won overwhelmingly in my little town of Jericho. The current governor (Democrat) fared well. All the town reps I like did best. And the two town referendum votes went the way I hoped. I am so grateful to live in Vermont!
With all the change today thanks to social media, and the coming of age of the young people among us, it seems to me that as the Baby Boomers age and die the youth of today will come into leadership positions. This same generation, the tech-saavy folks, will begin to lead the nation in public office, socially aware and accessible to constituents. We could certainly use some fresh energy from School Boards to Congress.
St Howard's first on this fine election day!!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately he wasn't one of the people I was allowed to vote for on this occasion.
