  2. We got home safely from NH, where we had a beautiful day with Grandson! More after I've slept.

  3. Hallo! I hope everyone is enjoying a break from the ordinary, whether that be due to special food, good company, snowfall or a strong of good movies to watch. :-)

For me it's kind of been all of the above. We had the big meal with our youngest and his wife's family yesterday, especially so that we could see Grandson in advance of his surgery on Tuesday morning. The little guy is only 19 months old, but he doesn't sleep well, has sore throats and fevers and swelling around his tonsils. So he's having a tonsillectomy, poor mite! He's incredibly sweet and amazingly cheerful under that duress.

My pies were a big hit, so that's fun! In addition to my cherry and pumpkin pies, we had Daughter's apple pie and a special Mince pie purchased from Mirabelle's elegant bakery in Burlington. That last is because Youngest's wife's dad loves it and it turns out Mah*Sweetie likes it too. No one else tried it. LOL!

We are up to about 9" of snow this week, and just drove home in a squall. It's a winter wonderland here in so many ways. Beautiful!

As for the string of movies, we're planning to watch Contact again tomorrow night, then go see the movie Interstellar on Sunday after yet another big meal (cooked here this time). :-)

    1. Only two people tried the mince pie?? Granted, there were a number of very attractive alternatives. Making a meal of just pie would have been a temptation. But still ...

    2. I'm with you, Bill. Always first. 2nd most fav is sweet potato pie. Never made another pumpkin after my first. It's like a fluffy pumpkin pie, lol! So just went looking for a low carb version of the mince. Found it! And it's a beaut--even had cranberries in it!

    3. The funny thing is that the poor man never gets mince pie because he's the only one in his family who likes it, and Mah*Sweetie never gets mince pie because I only rediscovered this month, after 40 years of marriage, that he likes it, since he's the only one in our family who likes it. Ha! I vaguely recall a Thanksgiving when we were dating when I saw his Mom making a mince pie, and that he was in favour of it. But I didn't know he very much likes it!

  4. Meanwhile all phone lines in Vermont are messed up, and this includes the 911 system. Not good.

  5. Hi all. My 9-year-old grandson is here until Sunday and I can't get the kid off my computer until I lure him with food. I don't really mind. I did all the T-day cooking but the pies. My SIL does those because my sons like hers better. We had turkey breast, smoked drumsticks, meatloaf and ham. Mashed potatoes, turkey and also brown gravy. Green bean bake, stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, corn, Waldorf salad and cranberry sauce and croissants. Since I was so busy prepping food the day before and the day of I put a skeleton from Halloween on my couch with a sign around it's neck "The Last Person who made Snarky Comments about my Messy House".

Anyway, I sent most of the leftovers home with family. Grandson's visit wasn't planned, but is welcome. I will not be doing all the sewing I had planned - although he's so oblivious to everything except the computer he probably wouldn't even notice!

Yes, those are pretty pies, listener.

    1. That sounds like a yummy gathering, Susan!! We had turkey and gravy, Wheatloaf, white potatoes, butternut squash, candied sweet potatoes (I prefer mine plain!), green bean bake, stuffing and homemade whole-berry cranberry sauce. I only had to make two pies and the Wheatloaf. I was so lucky! On Sunday, though, we're having a full-fledged meal for three when Root*Center*Son comes over. :-)

What's Grandson interested in, Susan? Does he like Harry Potter? Maybe watch the first Harry Potter movie together, or go hilarious and watch Elf. Do it up big with popcorn and chocolate, then teach him how to play chess. Just some ideas. Got snow?

    2. listener, I can't even play chess. My mathlexia makes it incomprehensible to me. Grandson and I have watched the LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit: the desolation of Smaug. His dad is in IT, and his uncle is also on the computer nonstop, so he's deep in the family footsteps. Being a non-technie I do drag him away on occasion. It's easier in the summer because I can take him to the park to ride his scooter. My daughter and I missed the gene that makes the neural connections for math, she is much better than I am at technological things because they don't scare her - and they terrify me. Anyway, we are all of us big readers. In fact, Grandson found a book while we were in the grocery last night and I bought it for him; one of the Wimpy Kid Diary books.

  7. Waldorf salad--thanks for the reminder! My Mom used to make it, and it was very good, but I have never given it a try. I shall have to remedy that in the not too distant future (he says as he prepares a Post-It).

As for mince pie, it is clear there is no disputing taste; I am among those very much in favor of it. At a roadside restaurant we once (about 65 years ago) had some alleged mince pie that couldn't be called anything but raisin pie, and not good at all--but that was an aberration. puddle--tell me about your mince with cranberries!

listener--I have been cogitating about whether I should watch "Contact" or "Dave." "Contact" would be a good double feature with Interstellar. (BTW--I hear that the music in "Interstellar" is extremely loud.)

Beautiful weather today, frankly warm. I got an exceptional amount of yard work and miscellaneous other things done today--nice to be productive! Off to the hospital for one of my long shifts tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

    1. Thanks for the fair warning about the noise level in Interstellar, Alan! We'll look into it and see about bringing earplugs!

Take care, and may your long shift seem short.

    2. Don't forget she's trying to make this low carb. (saw another one made with green tomatoes. But you have to think about that ahead.)

      Mincemeat:
      1 cup Sugar-Free Dried Cranberries
      1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
      1/2 cup Swerve Sweetener
1 small apple, finely chopped (or chopped chayote squash)
      1/4 cup golden raisins, chopped
      1/4 cup Kelapo coconut oil
      Zest of one lemon
      Zest of one orange
2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
      2 tbsp water
2 tsp molasses (optional, for colour and flavour)
      1 tsp ground cinnamon
      1/2 tsp ground ginger
      1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
      1/4 tsp ground cloves
      3 tbsp brandy

  9. Ah, Alan, the dark cherries are a package of frozen Organic Sweet Dark Cherries and the bright red cherries are simply a can of cherry pie filling. I mix them together and don't add anything else. Simple! Let them come to room temperature before you fill the pie. I'd prefer just the dark cherries in a pie, I think, though might need to heat some through and mash them to make the "broth." I only did it two-tone, as it were, because Daughter likes it that way most, and it was in honour of her birthday!
