Glorious

Today our entire immediate family will actually all be in one place, to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.  Last month, on our actual date, PhD*Son was on a remote island!   ~ listener

  1. How very nice! I don't think Howard would mind if you-all were number one here for a day. And I also hope your grand-munchkin had a good time on her fifth birthday.

Due to a scheduling mix-up at my secondary job I have two unanticipated weekends off, this being one of them. On the bright side, it's nice to have a little vacation.

Poking around the Intertubes I came across an incredible British performer--Jo-Ann Kelly. She sang and played the Delta Blues PERFECTLY. It took me a little time to get my mind around the incongruity of a young white woman with red hair singing and playing like she just stepped out of the Yazoo Delta circa 1920, but the music quickly took control of my perception. Here's a link to a performance at a club in Bristol: Moon Going Down [Click]

  3. Back inside and back to taking it easy. Worked in the yard for about three hours, from 11:30 to 2:30--weeding, pruning, etc. If the scale is to be believed I must have sweated out about four or five pints of water; if it weren't for salt pills and drinking water I could have been in trouble. (As I type this I am making more typographical errors than normal, which is a sign of fatigue.) The temperature must have been a hundred degrees or a bit more--but it IS July/August in Fresno. But it is SO wonderful to have two (soon to be three!) weekends off in a row. Only two years and two months until I have EVERY weekend off…

On another note altogether, if anyone is considering the shingles vaccine, I had it a while back and it was no trouble at all for me. It is the most expensive vaccine out there, and is only about sixty-some percent effective at preventing shingles, but those who do develop the disease can reasonably expect milder cases. The cost was covered by our insurance, so why not? I always talk up the pneumococcus vaccine too--I think even young people should get it. Pneumoccal pneumonia is still a killer, and I believe there is only one antibiotic left that is 100% effective against it.

And now for a bit of Aretha Franklin while surfing the InnerTubes…
