A bit of snow overnight. Doesn't seem to be snowing right now, and the weather people still seem uncertain how much to predict for the entire storm. Could depend on where you are in the Chicago area, which is often the case.
Nancy came down to clear the ice path from my car to the porch with her pickax. Failed. So tomorrow is bringing wood ash to spread so she can deliver eggs before the biggol snow headed our way. Love that woman!
I know that wood ash is supposed to work great but I have always found it to be a bit slipsy and rather dirty/messy. Take care. ♥ We were able to get some non-salt, creature-safe ice melter. That has really saved me from a second fall. Reinjury would not be okay.
We had some more rain (and wind) yesterday. Today we went to San Jose for lunch with Naomi and shopping, and passed through some rain on the way back—it will probably pass here tonight. The new grass in the fields and on the hillsides is nice and green, although still short—except where last year’s dead grass was burnt away it doesn’t yet stand out. We saw a few poppies starting to bloom.
My not feeling well the other night turned out to simply be exhaustion. Two nights’ good sleep and a reduction in stress due to delays in a number of apparently converging court cases next week have done wonders for me. The balance of this evening will be continued R&R, then I have a fair (but not overwhelming) amount of consulting work to take care of on Sunday.
For Sunday breakfast I am going to try a variation of an old-time favorite—Dutch Baby, AKA Oven Pancake. My old recipe goes:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Melt three tablespoons (I use somewhat less) butter in hot (cast iron) frying pan (medium heat on stovetop—one could heat it in the oven I suppose) and run it all around the inside.(Try to avoid browning the butter.) Pour into the pan a mixture of three eggs, half a cup of flour and half a cup of milk with nutmeg (fresh grated is best) to taste. Pop it into the oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Divide, remove from pan and serve with fruit syrup or jam. Makes four modest or two generous servings. One could add a bit of powdered sugar for looks. (Note: after removal from the oven it will fall, but still looks fine.)
Tomorrow I will adjust the flour to two thirds of a cup, add some finely grated orange peel, and separate the eggs, beating the whites and folding them in after mixing the other ingredients.
Seems like I was busy all day today, yet got not much done.
Spent yesterday (Friday) afternoon most enjoyably, watching Barry Manilow's first television special. Bought a boxed set of the first five. Only problem is, the DVDs are not region 1. Since the DVD drive on my computer only allows five resets of region, I'm a bit unclear on whether it will be possible to watch all five of them once before the limit is reached. Don't think I'll risk it. Will only watch four. Disappointing but not tragic. The main DVD player that goes with the TV is showing signs of age. Eventually I'll have to replace it and, when that happens, I'll look for a multi-region one. Anyway, the first special is fantastic! Curiously, I have only the dimmest of memories of seeing it when it was originally broadcast, though of course I did. Funny ol' thing, memory. Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon I'm going to watch "Copacabana!"

I've had that experience. Usually means that something I thought would be quick and simple wasn't. Sometimes there are unexpected complications but sometimes it's just time-consuming. In fact, I had that experience today. Editing a section of a paper that the researchers had provided. Wasn't really difficult, but it was a long section and simply ate up more time than I had thought it would.
Howard is da Lion every month of the year!
