I was looking for a festive bird on Sunday; a turkey is rather much for the two of us, so I looked at alternatives. Goose was surprisingly expensive; but I found capons for a reasonable price; haven’t had one for decades. Maybe some day heritage turkeys will come down in price, but for now they are in the luxury price range.
Hallo! Home from work at last! Grueling day of shopping then work and a storm ensuing to boot.
We have some obligate carnivores coming for Thanksgiving, so we bought an 8lb turkey breast from a local organic place. No bone and it will only take a few hours to cook, so I won't need to get up at 6am like my mother used to. Everything else in the meal is vegetarian, so it's a big YUM day!
I'm looking forward to making squash soup. We also plan to have some sweet potato latkes and cranberry applesauce in honour of the day, along with the usual fare. VT*Grand and I made the pumpkin pies yesterday. :-)
I've been busy with my magazines. Finished the December Asimov's and making good progress with the December Analog. This new serial looks promising, though I can't shake the idea that the protagonist has somehow gotten into his virtual game world. That would be pretty lame, though, and Analog doesn't publish lame stories, so there must be some other explanation for the situation.
The roofing contract is signed. I couldn't believe how picky Penny was about minor details. But that means she will get exactly what she wants, which is good.
Sis is worried about Dad going out to pick up our Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. It will be a mob scene and, worse, the weather will be bad. It's already getting bad. There was sleet earlier and now I can hear rain and possibly sleet. She doesn't want him going out at all. It is worrisome, but what can you do? The supermarket doesn't deliver. Come to that, the local pizza place doesn't deliver either, not that *ghat* has anything to do with the price of tea in China.
BTW I saw Puddle on FB earlier this evening. She said her phone was out since Wednesday and even now that it's back, it's unreliable. This would explain her not being here. Glad I happened to see her post.
The tale of The Three Little Pigs must have been written by a Democrat. Think about it. The brick-house pig takes in his foolish brothers, sharing his home and his substance with them. Any self-respecting Republican pig would have told his brothers they were reaping the fruits of their foolishness, if they couldn't protect themselves from the Big Bad Wolf that was their lookout, and slammed the door in their faces.
I'm surprised the Republicans haven't banned "The Three Little Pigs" since it condones the Welfare State.
Howard ain’t no turkey, nor a chicken neither.

LOL Alan.
DeleteWe had a capon one year, or it might have been for Christmas. I recall liking it - rather rich, but tasty and much nicer than goose.

Yeah, especially as the Wolf is a Republican!
