The court martial went to the jury this afternoon (Wednesday), so I am no longer needed. I thought I would be put on to testify, but as things turned out it probably wouldn't have added that much to the defense case. The lead defense attorney thanked me very nicely for the help I had been in the case--I think I gave her enough pointers to get everything she really needed from the prosecution expert. The judge and I happened to walk out of the courthouse together and had a very nice little chat; he said he thought I should have been put on to fill in a thing or two, and that he looks forward to hearing me testify some day.
cat--the NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigation Service) seems (unfortunately not for the first time) to have done a job in this case that leaves much to be desired, and did not serve the prosecution well. I had another case not long ago where the problem seemed to be the investigator's lack of experience; this time the agent had lots of experience, so I begin to suspect that it might be a matter of organizational culture.
It seemed (to me) a really weak alleged sexual assault case to begin with, and I expect a not guilty verdict--but we will see. Given the attention the subject has received in the news media, as well as the great efforts the Navy is making to deal with such things, I sure hope the bloviators don't just get ahold of the result and jump to erroneous conclusions. I expect the accused will be sent to an alcohol rehab program, but the complainent needs that too--and I doubt she will get it. If I hear I will pass it along. --Alan
Not currently teaching any psychology courses, I developed an irresistible urge to create some online resources (homework helpers, supplemental materials) to review some of the trickier concepts in introductory psychology classes. Here is attempt number one.
Kimmy Cash Fairbaugh's first grader fell today from the monkey bars during school recess and broke her left arm pretty badly above the elbow. She's in surgery right now. Prayers and Vibes appreciated!
A fairly easy day at work today (Thursday, at least for a while). I picked up my new glasses from Costco on the way home. Readers seem a little stronger, astigmatism correction on bifocals is perfect (tested by looking at the moon after dark). As usual, new glasses will take a bit of getting used to.
I will shortly get back to work completing our itinerary for the Canada trip; I should have it done sometime this weekend with ease.
My primary weight loss objective was to get down to 172 lbs (starting from 209.5) by the beginning of September; I got down to 171 by Sept. 10th. I should be able to get it down below 170, and I am shooting for 167, before we depart for Canada. I will be happy with 167 +/- 2 lbs for the long run. (My reference for target weight loss is the large bag of kitty litter from Costco. I used to pack around THAT MUCH FAT?!)
Good work has enduring value. That even applies to people...
