  3. HUHsayWHAT?!

Right at this moment the radar on WU shows a big patch of precip headed my way, and for some reason it is all showing up RED on the radar map!!! Weather.com just shows it as ordinary green rain, and no one has warnings up. So what's with the red on the radar?! Is someone at WU central maybe colour blind? (Red and green are seen by some colour blind folks as identical.)

Either way, I guess I'd best get to sleep. Staff meeting first thing in the morning. But we had a gorgeous weekend with perfect weather: mostly sunny, mid-70's, humidity around 38%, gentle breezes. Amazing!

Oh, and we took a trip through Vermont to the Weston Playhouse to see Fiddler on the Roof. Well done!
It took longer to get there than planned, so although we could SEE the Vermont Country Store right there, we didn't have time to go in before the play. Then the play went 3 hours instead of 2, so the VCS waa closing as it ended.

We saw a lot of the areas that were hard hit a year ago when Irene flooded here. Some are still waiting to be repaired.

    1. Weather's been weird the past several days -beautiful, but unsettling. Feels like June or even May rather than August. Can't imagine what Fall and Winter are gonna be like. Oh well, guess I should enjoy the lovely weather while we have it.

  5. I don't. One more news note and off to bed:

Australia's banks worth more than those of the Eurozone:

  6. Dagnabbit! Lost a good long post!!

Short of it -- slept well and long, and am grateful!

Just made it to 61ยบ!! Big chunk of rain just done. Trees are just beginning to start losing leaves on a regular basis.

I actually hope we have a REAL winter this year. Without one, fleas, ticks, and flies are much bigger pests the next summer.

  7. Well, well, for me this has been a momentous day.

It began with emails from our Town Clerk and the Chair of the town Democrats. Turns out that even though absentee voting has begun for the Primary, it is not too late for my name to be added to the ballot . . . ! This is because one person had to drop out of the running for Justice of the Peace, owing to being a state employee, as it would be in violation of the Hatch Act. So the first thing I had to do was find out if there’s a similar concern about me, since I work in the public library. That necessitated a call to the Secretary of State’s office. Long story short, since the Library is a municipality and my salary is paid by town taxes in two towns (rather than by the state or federal governments) it’s no problem. Turns out it would be too late to put my name in the running as an Independent, and anyway, it was a Democrat (named Willy) who sat next to me at Lil Desso’s service and asked me to serve in her (Willy’s) stead this year. It’s a small town and I have no grevience at all with the Dems in town. They got permission to call a special Caucus to replace the guy who dropped out, and that Caucus is taking place tomorrow evening (while I’m working at the Library). As I recall, we go to the polls and vote for “not more than 12” Justices of the Peace. What dawned on me about an hour ago is that the Dem Chair’s email mentions that they got permission to have a special Caucus to choose a 12th name. What I don’t yet know is whether that means there will be 12 Dems pitted against 12 Repubs, or whether there will be 12 running in all . . . thus . . . unopposed. Yikes! I had assumed that since my last name begins with “S” and a lot of people just check off the first 12 names, that I had a reasonable chance of not being elected. LOL! It’s a two year term which would begin February 1st.

Mah*Sweetie is brushing up on his old Laugh In imitation of “Here comes the Judge, Here comes the Judge.” Too funny!

  8. Whew! According to my uproad neighbor, Nancy, we had just about 2" of rain in an hour this afternoon. Culverts are only running at 50% so I never would have known. We were only supposed to have 30% chance of rain today, which usually means zilch. Was I surprised!!

  9. Wrote to the guy who does the hiring for the alternative medicine school over a month ago, but didn't hear back. So I drove there in person to find out about fall quarter. He was meeting with someone, so his assistant took my name and number and said he'd call me. I cut my errands short so that I would be home when he called.

He didn't call, but sent a very short, impersonal e-mail telling me, basically, to go to hell. After turning in my key, of course.

    2. Thinking of the Spiderman line: "With great power comes great responsibility". Or something close to that anyway. In the real world, it doesn't work like that. The higher up you are, the more likely you are to have the ability to f*ck up someone's life without even having to look them in the face while you're doing it.

Yes, I'm bitter. I'm going to bed now. If the world could decide to stop sucking while I'm asleep, I'd be much obliged.

    4. Ohhhhhh, my heart hurts for you, Renee. It's bad enough to be told no, but it doesn't have to be done in an impersonal and rude manner. I'm praying that a more worthy money source comes your way quickly...or possibly Demetrius' way.

  12. Bummer, Renee.

By way of schaudenfruede, I heard the Romney-in-the-basement story was taking off and googled a likely search string. Sure enough. Here's one link:

Even better than anticipated, the basement is unfinished..

On the other hand, Romney did forcefully reject that stupid SOB Congressman's remarks about "legitimate rape" as opposed to, what, illegitimate rape? Must say I was unwillingly impressed with Romney's response. Heard that even some GOP group has withdrawn support from the idiot - what's his name? That surprised and heartened me. Not all Republicans are utterly brainless and heartless...only most of them.

The myth that the trauma of forcible rape triggers mechanisms that prevent pregnancy has been debunked for so long, I'm surprised anyone still trots it out. Even he can't be so ignorant as to actually believe it. And of course he falls back on the false dichotomy between "real rape" and some other kind that isn't real, presumably some kind that the victim invites or secretly enjoys. That's another piece of filth I thought we'd had done with. How can there still be - how could there ever have been - men who are so stupid and insensitive? It's bad enough that some males (they are not men!) use sex as a weapon, an instrument of torture. But some of the ones who don't do that seem to find at least some that do admirable in some sense. After all, the bitch asked for it, didn't she? And, you can't call it rape since, though she'd never admit it, she secretly loved every minute. And there was that abhorrent measure the House Republicans proposed some months back, proposing that a woman couldn't claim to have been raped unless she could prove she had resisted. The whole thing is terribly discouraging. We aren't making much progress as a species, are we?

  14. listener, if it should be good for you to know, you will be told. [grin]

Renee, at one point some years back, I was in a real hard spot job-wise. The Chemistry Department in the local state college decided they were going to start a forensic toxicology program, and posted an opening. Well, the job would have some public respect, and it was almost next door. As it happened, I was the only applicant who met the given qualifications. But what the professors wanted was not what they said; they wanted someone who would fit into the lowest rung of their clique, not someone with experience, maturity and self-confidence. So they withdrew the job posting and rewrote it to get the sort of person they really wanted, practical experience and ability be damned. They did, and I heard from a person who started the program that it was not only very poor quality but disintegrating. I don't even know if they are still pretending to offer it. It wasn't long before a far more satisfactory job opened up for me, that I still have. And I think the Chemistry Department is having to absorb more and more cuts.

And I recall a friend of mine who got himself into one tight spot after another, business-wise; just as everything was closing in on him, he would slip out of the scrum and survive. He seemed honestly to believe that God would provide, and darned if He didn't seem to! The fellow did very well with a chain of cookie shops.

Looking back at end of previous thread… …. …. No need to apologize for the "rant," Cat. Although Romney did seem to eventually get it right, it took him a day, I notice.

My left leg has been giving me hob the better part of a week now, but is getting better with massage treatments (administered variously by machine, myself, and my sweetie). Aching pretty bad due to tightened muscles, but fortunately it doesn't affect my walking. Past two nights I woke up very early because of the discomfort; tonight I will take a Norco (Vicodin plus Tylenol) pill of the many I had left over from my medical adventures. Kind of an extreme thing for me to do, but I need to be able to sleep.

    TTFN
