Oh, what a cute kitten! And yes, Howard Dean is first. But not as furry.
I had a nice nap in the hotel lobby. For some reason (cool room, light blanket?) I had been waking up early every day in San Diego.
Plane arrived in Fresno 25 minutes early--must have had a tailwind. It's a fairly big propjet; not as snazzy as the regional jets the previous company used, but nothing to complain about.
Amazingly, I didn't put on any weight on the road, although I sure feel like it. I look forward to having "normal" amounts of vegetables.
Saturday is for resting up and taking care of various odds and ends. (Mercenary nature speaking: definitely including sending bills to Navy.) Sunday we zoom off to the Bay Area, meet up with Naomi in San Jose for lunch, and do some shopping. Miyoko gets her first turn behind the wheel of our/her new car.
Here's the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego, where I normally caught the Trolley. They are currently rebuilding the Trolley line, stations, and will have fancier cars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(San_Diego,_California)#Santa_Fe_Depot
From the absence of activity it sounds like a lazy Saturday afternoon for everybody. I just finished an hour-and-a-half nap. Encouraged, I suspect, by bright sunshine and temps in the high 80s.
Would have been perfect but that I managed to sprain my ankle as we walked on a causeway of huge stones our at Provincetown. Nurse Teri would be proud of how swiftly we got me doing R.I.C.E. Then we bought me a cane, so tonight the swelling is down.
Glad to hear at least the good part of the news, about the swelling going down. Hope things continue to get better.
Sprains are no fun. I sprained my ankle several decades ago. Didn't have sense enough to take a cab home. Instead continued to walk to the EL station. It was probably a week before I could get around again and I used a cane for months.
Computer gremlins ate my post; then the beginning of the repeat. No I am composing it in a text editor, to cut and paste.
I got a lot of little chores out of the way that had piled up while I was in San Diego. Last one was to apply for Social Security (Miyoko's to start when I reach 66, mine to be suspended until I turn 70). The online application system was not working for some reason. Well, tomorrow's another day.
Main plan for tomorrow is to drive up to San Jose for shopping and to have lunch with Naomi at a very good ramen shop in Cupertino (lots of computer engineer types among the customers). Miyoko took her new Camry Hybrid for a first spin--that will be our ride for tomorrow. She quickly noticed the different feel to the brakes (they are more powerful--electrical generation first, then conventional disk brakes if one presses them hard enough), and I have warned her about the increased power of the engine. The difference isn't enough that one is likely to be taken by surprise and loose control, but it's enough to get one's attention (and Miyoko hasn't mastered the gradual takeoff technique). Yesterday, while going along a high-speed through street, I was doing a little experimenting. For some reason it seems that one gets very significantly better gas mileage with the cruise control than with manual control at the same speed. We are also prepared to test the CD player…
Some years ago I had a rental car with cruise control. Didn't take me too long to figure out that I'd better not use it -- put the car on cruise control and my attention wandered. But that's me.
I love cruise control for interstate driving. Wouldn't use it below 55or so or on those stretches where the traffic varies speed a lot. But in Vermont, where the interstate sees very light traffic, it's perfect, and saves my poor gas-pedal leg.

ReplyDeleteWe're on vacation on Cape Cod and have had gorgeous weather: blue sky, 70s, with just enough clouding over land to make a sunset pretty.

Sprains are VERY definitely no fun. Don't underestimate it, listener.

ReplyDeleteAlan, can't wait to hear how the CD player performs! How many speakers? Good balance? What brand?
