  3. Thanks, Cat!! I had done that before, but it evidently reset itself to the default! Back to: "Download updates for me, but let me decide when to install them."

I remember seeing the dialog box more than a few times asking if it could, so when it reset itself, I have no idea! System Restore has never worked since the reformat, so I know it's not that, lol!

Still don't have family on board for getting another dog, but Winnie is SOOOO bored. And I do *occasionally* have work to do that prevents me from taking her on all-day outings...

  10. The article does reference the 2008 music video, "I have a crush on Obama." But both seem quite tame compared to the music video that last year got nominated for a Hugo (science fiction) award for Best Dramatic Presentation -- Short Form against episodes of established TV series. I can't even put an unbowdlerized version of the title on this blog, but let's say it expresses a strong desire for physical interaction with Ray Bradbury.

Laying and *maintaining* those thousands of mile of underwater electrical cables is the challenge.

  13. It seems to happen to all of us with alarming regularity.

  14. Pardon my French but: Windows 7 is an unmitigated piece of shit, expressly designed to be unattractive, illogical and difficult to use.

  15. You're welcome, Puddle. Computers reset themselves. It seems impossible, but it happens. It was probably a power surge, maybe one so small the lights didn't even flicker.

  16. Oh, heck. When this one finishes dying that's my destiny.

I must say that I have been very happy with Windows 7 ever since it came out. Whether it's notably better than XP is arguable, but it's certainly no worse.

Now Vista --- It wasn't too bad by the end, but it was lousy when it first came out.

  18. It's not very popular around these parts either. It doesn't seem to "play well with others'' (meaning the computers on our home network that still run XP.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe by that time I'll have mine subdued to my will, uh, figured out and will be able to help you with yours. It's probably not so bad if you're fully sighted. Adding to my frustration is my inability to get Window-eyes set to my satisfaction.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Apparently it doesn't play well with Fire Fox either. On the very first YouTube video I tried to play, the computer froze.

  21. That was cute! Not sure though about getting Winnie a pet. . . . I only say that because that's exactly what I did, for exactly the same reasons. In the event, Tuff never liked the new puppy, and spent a whole lot of time trying to be let alone. And I mean for ten years, until he died. Roosevelt was not obnoxious or pushy, but I think Tuff just saw him as one more job he could have lived without. So neither of them really got much companionship out of the deal. Sorry, I don't have any good answers. Wish I did.

  22. Well, *I* want a second dog, but it has to get along with Winnie, who gets along with some dogs and not others. I brought Winnie to the shelter again today to visit with Bodie again as well as other dogs. Today, Bodie decided he *hates* Winnie.

Winnie and Perkins got along pretty well

  23. Called the pharmacy to give them my CC #, and they said Lisa had already mailed them. So I asked for prices, and wondered why they were almost double, but gave her the number. Then headed for the post office. Imagine my delight that the new prescriptions were all for 90 days! And I remembered the convo with her; did I want to try for 90? -- that if insurance wouldn't pay at 90, they could break it down to thirty. So for three times as much, I paid twice as much. Nice surprise. I especially like the potassium one: it was already double because for the 20meq, you can break it in half and dissolve in water/soup/juice and the mini grains still maintain their time release capacity (which isn't true for the 10meq version). So I really have a six months supply! Yay! And I love having a pharmacist I like, trust, and who is interested in natural medicine! Right here in the wilds of WV, lol!

I've shifted over to using Firefox here because this is one of the half-handful of sites that does not play well with the current version ofIE. When somebody posts a video link, I can play it with no trouble.

It occurs to me that Windows 7 may possibly make heavy demands on computer processing resources. That's not something I would notice but someone with an older computer might.

  25. Also, the old insurance policy was it would only pay for the generic version of my thyroid. I tried it, and it just didn't work. Since my prescription is *already* the generic version of synthroid, the generic of the generic just was not good. So I'd been paying the full price out of pocket for years. Then I switched to Armour thyroid, which they also didn't pay for, at all. After two years of dealing with supply difficulties on the Armour, I switched back, and they just submitted it, and ins *paid* ~~ woohoo! So I just got three months of thyroid for 1/3 of what I was paying for one month. I feel *slightly* better on the Armour (it has more T3), but not *that* much better, lol! Cappy hamper here.

  26. I do think what you're doing -- the visiting, is a good thing. Both as a short-term project, and as a possible long term outcome. Think you must have some of your mom's genes. Ya think? &hearts

  27. Look at that face!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good point about Mom's jeans, puddle. ;-)

What about a regular pet sitting job, by which Winnie could have a visitor each week, and you can have a little spare change?

  29. Mah*Sweetie's sentiments exactly!

Windows 7 has wreaked havoc with all the software programs he designed and sells. He basically had to rewrite them to survive Windows 7. What a mess!

  30. SWEET!! I love this news!! Whoo hoo!! I hope you celebrated by buying a turkey or something!

  31. How strange...!

  32. Wow, it really is...!

    ReplyDelete
  33. BTW, listener, Adonis and Esmerelda are *quite* fetching!

  34. You can't buy turkeys at my country store/post office. I did however buy a couple of home made (by our local cake lady) easter eggs -- dark choc and peanutbutter and white choc and coconut. My second and third occasions of carbs since February 4.

  35. That's Perkins. I've seen his face countless times while looking through the shelter listings, and just felt "drawn" to him. But, given that I only had a picture to go by, that seemed kind of superficial.

I've been trying to find a dog that would be "acceptable" to the rest of the family. Things aren't going so great. It's not just that I miss Brady--it's that I'm apparently a dog living in a house full of cats. You know, how dogs are "pack animals" and cats will come around when they feel like it? Well, the humans in my house are all very into their own thing, and I spend hours every day (the days I don't teach, I mean) with no real human interaction.

It sucks. Everybody else around here is happy to have one fewer animal in the house, and I have this huge hole in my life. I was pretty much ignored most of the time before, but having two dogs as part of my "pack" helped keep things in balance somehow. Now everything is way out of whack.

  36. ANYWAY...here's the description of the beagle that got along okay with Winnie the other day, but was all "hackles up" today:

"Bodie is one of the quietest beagles we've ever had at CHA. He just lays in his kennel and we can honestly say we have never heard him bark. Not to say he wouldn't at times like all dogs, but he is remarkably reserved and peaceful. Bodie gets along with other dogs and would probably be most comfortable living with laid back dogs. Bodie enjoys using his beagle nose to follow smells as he takes walks and would love to cuddle on the couch with you as you watch a movie or read a book. This precious boy is the perfect calm companion!"

Now, I'm a fan of big dogs, but this description sounded promising as far as a dog that could be perceived as less "disruptive" by the rest of the family, and maybe physically taking up less space would be a plus.

But it's clear that Bodie will not be joining our family. Oh, and he does bark. He barked at Winnie a LOT.

  37. Bill, that's what I don't understand. I specifically bought a computer with the highest possible CPU speed, RAM etc. precisely because of the heavy demands I put on the computer. Dad hasn't really run anything, just tested eacheach program as he installs it. And of course he doesn't use Firefox so it didn't occur to him to check out YouTube using it. But Sis has also mentioned having difficulty using YouTube on Firefox on Win7. So there must be some problem with that combo. It's highly irritating, since I have always refused to use IE on principle.

The days of this, XP machine are numbered, which is why we bought the new computer now rather than waiting till this one finally bites the dust. This way I have some time to get used to the new one while still using this one. Word7 looks especially nasty. Nobody I know likes it. How do you find it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow Puddle, excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes, two just is not enough for a pack, whereas three is just enough.I hope you get it worked out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Have they only had the two meetings?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bill Thomasson4/12/2012 11:48:00 PM

I have had no problems at all with Windows 7. Was glad to move on from Vista. Only noticeable software problem was with the driver for my ZoomText keyboard (which has special keys to control ZoomText functions). It's only been recently that they have come out with an upgrade that works properly with Windows 7 and also can be installed on a 64-bit computer.

Crashes seem at least as rare as on XP and I'd say that general ease of use is also comparable. In fact, for the things I do it seems rather hard to tell the difference.

Renee ~~ Very insightful post. We're all cats in my house. And we own cats. So it works out. Hope things work out for you.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mum and I are cats. Dad and Sis are dogs. As you can imagine, the combo doesn't always work out to everyone's satisfaction.

Dad said something funny the other day, namely that Mr. Campion ought to have been a puppy, the way he follows Dad around. He is indeed pretty gregarious for a cat.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Campy, that is, not Dad.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes. The first meeting was two days ago, and the person at the shelter said it looked like the two of them would be okay. They sniffed each other a bit, but spent most of their time exploring the play area. I wanted to see them actually *play* together a little bit, and have a chance to see a couple other dogs.

I don't feel any particular affection toward Bodie. I'm sure he's a nice enough dog. But I'm just not feeling it.

Perkins could well be a good fit, if I could get Demetrius on board.

By the way, the teddy bear you all sent me still sleeps with me every night. I've always enjoyed having something soft to hold at night. And the bear is a tangible reminder that there are people out there who I genuinely *matter* to.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm so glad that Ted E. Bear remains a comfort! :-)
