  2. puddle--I'm so sorry. Beyond that I'll keep my big mouth shut; we're all adults.

listener--I am still incredulous at how Vermont got whacked by Irene. Makes me want to say "Hey, you big lummox! How about picking on someone your own size!"

Long day today, but winding down to a calm finish. Got Miyoko's new cell phone working, coverage is obviously better than with previous provider. Have to wait until Tuesday to make sure we have the billing set straight, but that's a minor thing.

Good luck, Cat; at least nowadays it is much more possible to find someone long lost than it was when we were young.

  3. Thanks, Alan. Me too.

Beautiful cool green wet day here. Promising floods et al. . . Almost hope so -- be nice to have the spring running again.

  4. Thanks, Alan. Prospects aren't looking too bright, but I'll keep trying, for a while anyway.

  5. Got all wet getting watch before the flood, lol! Waited too long, and the rain had started.

Hooked up the spring again yesterday. Ran for about a half hour. Barely enough to clear. We need LOTS more rain. . . .

  6. The Great American Chocolate Bar is pretty un-American. But then that's not exactly news.

  9. I wonder if they're all atheists who think they'll never have to meet their maker, or be accountable for the shit they partake of and perpetuate. Catch is, all the atheists *I* know are super moral and would never, ever do garbage like that. Go figger.

  10. I believe greed will be the death of us all. Those "on top" pretty obviously care only about lining their pockets (usually at others' expense). And the poseurs in Washington care only about the next election. Never mind that with their jockeying for position they're destroying this country. And I mean that factually, not as hyperbole.

  11. It seems that there are not many capitalists these days (maybe there never were) who take anything resembling a long view; next year is too far away to seriously contemplate. I recall the old saw that anything that can be accomplished in less than ten years isn't worth much--and that was applied to individuals. I figure that a company should have a hundred-year plan at least. von Moltke's dictum that no plan of battle survives contact with the enemy, is not an abnegation of planning, but a call for foresight and planning for contingencies. Certainly not having any customers for one's products is a serious contingency...

    puddle ~~
Not surprising, really. Anyone who explicitly describes themselves as an atheist has obvioiusly devoted serious thought to these issues. The have probably devoted serious thought to moral issues as well, and reach the appropriate conclusions.

It is people who don't consider these matters worthy of serious thought who are likely to be oblivious to how their actions affect others.

    Alan ~~
Yes, I've known all along it was you.

Research-based companies necessarily take a long view. Perhaps especially pharmaceutical companies: bringing a drug from laboratory to market in 10 years would represent breakneck speed.

But the mutual fund managers that control most investment money nototiously find it hard to see beyond the next quarterly report. And all too often they force corporate CEOs to make short-sighted decisions.

  16. Tend to agree. There also seems to be a factor of: if this is ALL I've got, I better do it well. . .

  17. Moved the car up the road. Been raining good and solid for hours, and just picked up. Been under a flash flood watch since morning. Expect it'll be upgrade to warning before too long. Sounds *wonderful*!

  18. Speaking of floods, did I hear correctly that the current tropical storm is sending some rain to Texas and Louisiana? They really need it. Further inland they need it too. My friend in Tulsa said they haven't had rain in a long time. I don't remember how long she said, but a seriously long time.

  21. Louisiana, yes. However, all Texas got was the winds, which whipped up the hot air and now they are battling intense wildfires. One turned deadly today, and so far 476 homes have been lost. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/06/us-texas-wildfires-idUSTRE78426D20110906

  23. Well the family has all gone home, including our three adorable Granddaughters. What a lot of activity and fun and conversation and cuteness! Plus the kids surprised me with a little, unexpected birthday parry! Good times. And they helped get us through these first days without Emma-cat. I know it's going to hit me hard tomorrow evening when I get home from work, and Mah*Sweetie is still at work, and there's no kitty here to greet me and hang out with me. When Mah*Sweetie went to the store on Friday it was literally the first time I had been entirely alone in the house in 27 years. Tuesday evening will be the second time.

  24. P.S.: Actually, I think the Galveston area got some of Lee's rain.
But the fire 20 miles SW of Austin is dang scary!

  25. Perhaps. I've also known some folks who say they're atheist because they have some old baggage related to faith traditions. Yet when I get talking with them they aren't necessarily any more kind or thoughtful than the average citizen.

  26. Louisiana is getting more than I think they want. Texas doesn't seem to be getting much/if any. My friends in Alabama are happy. And this rain I'm getting seems to be a slow moving cold front picking up moisture from Lee, which won't be here till week's end.

  28. That is indeed horrible, and that's only commenting on the workers' conditions during production of the chocolate. Remember that what the chocolate is made of also has ethical concerns, related to the chocolate not being fair trade and all the exploitation and child abuse involved in getting the cocoa!
