  1. Howard is First!

Saw this in the Noo Yawk Tahmes today:

Catholics in Belgium Start Parishes of Their Own
    NYT Nov. 16th

Also in the new National Geographic Magazine they have a short piece about Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia church (now a basilica). It seems it may be compled by 2026. Frankly I had no idea it was so spectacular; NGS has a photo looking up from the nave--Wow!

  2. Reading about the Belgians finding a new Way is very enheartening!
    More power to them.

There is a precedent for this in Scripture, really:
"I will smite the shepherd and the sheep with be scattered."

Yes, and then after a fashion the sheep will regather and make a new beginning.
God does not take kindly to shepherds who pasture themselves on their sheep,
yet goes out in search of even a stray lamb.

So, what did those powerful, abusive church leaders expect?

Some of the shepherds pastured themselves on their sheep
so he has come out against them and scattered his people of faith

  4. Woo hoo! My birdbath de-icers got here already. I ordered two of the model I used last winter that I know works well.

I'm being a *very* good woman today. I'm leaving for strength training class in 15 minutes even though my calves are still *really* sore from Tai Chi yesterday. I'm being especially good considering all I really want to do is crawl under a warm puffy comforter and nap!

Ally is a real cuddlebug cutie pie.

  5. Oh no! I missed Howard's birthday!

Alan, according to Behind the Name (http://www.behindthename.com), Carly is feminine, though I suppose it might be used as a diminutive or pet form of Carl.

Thanks, Bill! I responded to your e-mail.

listener, I had a feeling you'd love the blue. The red seemed very bright on my monitor, whereas the blue was perfect.

  6. Susan, I admire you!

  7. Well, between Carly Simon and Carly Fiorina and wouldn't have imagined that it was other than feminine, lol!

  8. Just sent this letter to the editor to the paper:

    To the editor:

The impression conveyed by media outlets that the trial of Ahmed Ghailani somehow failed because he was convicted on only one of two hundred and eighty-five counts troubles me deeply.

In the United States, there is a principle, which states that a defendant is innocent until proven guilty. Any defendant, an accused auto thief, an accused Mafia boss or an accused rapist is accorded this right and privilege. If the defendant is acquitted by a jury who, unlike the public, has heard all the evidence and arguments, the defendant is not guilty. That is the way the system works. The public sometimes finds the jury’s verdict unpalatable, but that does not make the verdict wrong.

The jury acquitted O.J. Simpson, although the court of public opinion had convicted him of murder. Does that disconnect mean the U.S. court system is incompetent to try accused murderers? No. It means the jury found that the case presented against Mr. Simpson was not persuasive beyond reasonable doubt. The system worked. Similarly, with Mr. Ghailani, the jury found that the case against him was not persuasive beyond reasonable doubt with regard to all but one count. The system worked.

Yet even the usually sober PBS News Hour gives the impression in its coverage that the verdict in the Ghailani case was a mistake that calls into question the wisdom of trying terrorism suspects in the ordinary civilian courts. The clear implication is that any verdict other than conviction on all counts for such defendants is unacceptable. This assertion, even if unspoken, that defendants accused of certain crimes must always be convicted, that merely being accused of certain crimes makes a person guilty, is not only frightening but un-American. Those who propound it are far more dangerous than any terrorist.

  9. Here's the lyric as presently constituted. I donno. Maybe with a good, strong melody... Songs have become hits on less, but I really don't think this has much potential. However...

Carly, a girl named Carly loves me.
There’s sunshine in her smile and sweetness in her heart.
And when she looks into my eyes, I know we’ll never part.

    Carly, my Carly loves me.
I’ll tell the world you’re mine.

When I kiss her, sparklers fill the air and rainbows everywhere
And when I love her, a joy I can’t express means endless happiness

With Carly, my Carly loves me.
I’ll tell the world you’re mine.

And when I kiss her, sparklers fill the air and rainbows everywhere
And when she loves me, a joy I can’t express means endless happiness

With Carly, my Carly loves me.
    I thank the Lord.
I’ll tell the world you’re mine.

  11. I knew this line wasn't right:

And when she looks into my eyes, I know we’ll never part.

    It's been corrected:

And when she looks at me, I know we'll never part.

  12. Go Susan!!

After you've done what has to be done, be sure to save a little time for comfort too. ♥

So, do you prefer the flat rubber deicers or the metal kind?

  13. Your monitor was spot on, Cat! Good sleuthing!

It looks nice with my blue Mini!

  14. Thank-you, Catreona! I needed someone to say that and you said it so well!

  15. Sooo, we're in Concord, NH now for my meeting in the morning.

All day we waited for news on Hubby's brother, and nothing came. We knew he MUST be out of surgery, but still no news. So I left for work on tenterhooks the whole time. Hubby promised to call or come by the Library as soon as he heard. When I didn't hear from him I feared that the news was really bad and he didn't want to upset me at work. The coworker I worked a little for on Saturday came in an hour before my shift ends, returning the favour. Hubby picked me up so we could head to NH. It was 7:15pm and he had NO WORD YET. Argghhh!! The suspense!

So on the way to Concord, we stopped in West Lebanon, NH at the Vermont border at the Panera Bread there (from which I have posted at HEP numerous times!). We got there 10 minutes before closing, so we just went in and checked email and that's all. AT LAST we had word about Hubby's brother!! Earthlink has been messed up off and on all day and these messages had been sent at 5pm and 6pm and we hadn't gotten them until after 7pm. Finally we read that the surgery went very well, "like clockwork," the tumor is out and the docs don't think the pancreatic cancer had spread at all. { !!! } We'll know for sure next week when the Path Lab Report comes back. But this is the absolutely best outcome we could have hoped for!!

We imagined we would hoot and holler at such news, but we felt such depth of gratitude and relief that we just sat there in awe.

I still can't write this without getting all misty-eyed. This makes 4 family members who've had cancer and survived. Sure wish they'd had this knowhow when Hubby's mom had it.

    Take care, everyone! ♥

    :-D

  16. Carly Fiorina I know; Carly Simon was just a name I had heard. I plead ignorance. I took Carly for a diminutive of Charlotte, which would be the feminine form of Charles.

  17. Preeeety radical, that--letting justice get in the way of convictions! Indeed, well said. You will note that those "military tribunals" are specially designed to not offer the protections and due process of both courts martial and civilian courts. Everyone is entitled to a vigorous defense; anyone who can't accept that has no business being involved in the legal system IMO. I hadn't paid much attention to the case, but now my interest is piqued. I quit listening to PBS several years ago, having become pretty well convinced they toed the corporate and government line in their news coverage.
