  2. Cat, any interesting weather on Monday where you are?
We were going to be driving through Boston at rush hour, and nearly opted to west on Route 2 to 91N, but braved Boston after all. Got home and heard there'd been a tornado in western MA!

  4. Just read through the blogs.

Thanks for all the Ally candles!!!!!!!

It's great to hear about so many of you reading and about book groups.
Funny how that's pretty much my life now...the Library.

I'll post some nice photos of this trip once the Brick House photos are done.

Hannah....the closest we came to Durham was Manchester, on this trip. It was more driving than we like but we made it.

Catreona...we actually passed near Springfield on our way to Bloomfield. We had to be there by a certain time, then press on to Woods Hole. THAT was a long day! Left home around 10am and got to Woods Hole about 8pm.

  7. Uhhh... There was what might have been thunder earlier... With the AC on, I really can't hear much of anything. But, nobody mentioned a tornado.

I've been working hard all evening and haven't yet checked the weather. So, I have no idear what sort of weather is scheduled for tomorrow, err, today. I don't care much, as long as the humidity goes away.

  8. Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone" still holding up VERY well. Good interplay between characters and plot, sociological insights into early Victorian England that make nice comparison and contrast with Edwardian England, interesting structure, and plot twists one after another!

BTW, it just occurred to me today that one could write a very interesting essay comparing and contrasting John Brown's raid on the Arsenal at Harper's Ferry with Fidel Castro's assault on the Moncada Barracks. The similarities are almost mind-boggling, including motivations, execution, and ultimate results.

  10. I've been working on a new song tonight. Hadn't planned it, inspiration just struck. I'm so psyched! It's going well and feels great. Have I mentioned I love what I do?

Read all about the great American songwriter

  12. I'm reading Stephen King's book On Writing.

It's the first book by Stephen King I've ever read and I've never seen any of his movies. I am NOT interested in horror. But I sure do want to hear what a good writer has to say about his craft. It's worth a read too! Lots of pithy gems in the book.

  13. We came home and our duplex neighbour told us he found a rolled-up pamphlet in our driveway from the KKK calling President Obama a fascist. We don't yet know whether everyone in the neighbourhood was treated to the same or whether we were targeted because we have campaign signs (for a Democrat) at the end of our driveway. So I'm going to inform the campaign of this, as well as my Congressional delegation. Is there anyone else I should tell?

  14. Thanks! For the thought provoking comment too.

  15. I've heard it's very good. I love Ursula Le Guin's Steering the Craft. Marooner's Haven grew from an exercise in that book.

  16. The police!

Thank God it was nothing worse than a pamphlet!!! Oh, listener, that's so scary! The KKK in Vermont? You watch yourself, hear?

  17. Jeepers!! Creeps everywhere, even heaven! Cat's right, the police do need to know -- think the KKK is on the counter terrorism watch list. . . .

  18. OOOOOOOOH! My Engelbert Live at the London Palladium in 2000 DVD just arrived! Guess what I'll be doing this evening?

  19. My mom was a rabid fan of Tom Jones, the Welsh rock singer. He was a super star at the time Engelbert came along. Engelbert's manager changed from his read name to Engelbert Humperdink (sp?) to contrast with the simplicity of Tom Jone's name.

Same thing happened with Chubby Checker. He was "named" to contrast with Fats Domino.

Ah, the weird facts I retain at the same time I can't remember what I came upstairs for!

    Go figure. ;)

  20. Um, that's "real" name. Don't know whether the issue is my typing ability or my attention span. :-[

  22. Lots warmer today (eighties) but about half the humidity of yesterday, so much more comfortable. I'll take it. Clouding over for our afternoon T-storm.

  23. What's this "was?" Tom Jones is still going strong, though I understand he's been ill recently and had to cancel a couple of concerts. The press makes a lot of the rivalry between him and Engelbert. I've heard conflicting things, both that they're rivals and that they're friends. Curiously, from what little I've seen, it seems that Engelbert fans often also like TJ but TJ fans usually don't also like Engelbert.

Umm, Susan, have you ever seen Tom Jones, even just on television? It's pretty hard not to become a little crazed when faced with such a force of nature. Now, Engelbert has just as much sex appeal, but it's not a tsunami that crashes over you and sweeps you away. It's gentler, subtler maybe. At any rate, I find Engelbert's style a whole lot easier to cope with...and more appealing. And, I like his material better. I can't honestly say he has a better voice than Tom - Tom's voice is magnificent! - but Engelbert has not only a beautiful voice but something else as well, I donno, warmth? sincerity? that makes him very special.

  24. Less humid here too, thank goodness!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh yeah, baby, I've seen him on T.V. Saw Engelbert too. Like both. Tom is *hot, hot hot* and Englebert is *smooth as silk*. Have to confess I always preferred the hot, even though I appreciate the smooth.

  26. I brought the pamphlet with me to Doug Racine HQ today and they looked it over with a fine tooth comb. In fact, as I walked in the door Doug's campaign manager was on the phone with him and she said, "June just came in and has the pamphlet." They were a little relieved it wasn't targeting Doug specifically. It's "just" Obama. I also just learned that no one else in the neighbourhood got the pamphlet, just us. So I do think it was because of our campaign sign. God bless our neighbour who found it, because he doesn't feel we need to remove our signs and is taking a very healthy viewpoint on the whole thing. I am so grateful.

Meanwhile, with Granddaughter*in*VT here, a neighbour at the next house came over to tell me she has breast cancer. Mind you, she and her husband has two little boys, the eldest in first grade. She wanted to tell me herself and has told only a few people so far. I am so glad she knew she could cry here. I was in shock but think I was a comfort to her anyway. She said she might need someone to call on at some point in case of emergency. I told her to call any time day or night. She found the lump herself and caught it very early, with no other trace of it anywhere. So that's a relief.

There is way too much cancer in the world.

  27. Err, yeah. That's what I was trying to say.

    To each her own... 8)

  28. Granddaughter*in*VT is not quite 3 years old. Today we discovered that when she is busy with something and doesn't want to be interrupted she explains,: 'I'm checking my email."

Hubby has been spontaneously giggling ever since. :-D

  32. LMEO listener. You've got a real keeper there. I suspect she'll be running the four minute mile or solving quadratic equations or something by the time she's six.

  33. Well, I just spoke with a VT state trooper. She told me that they have received calls from others in town here as well, such as two streets away. It's not illegal under free speech, but the KKK isn't supposed to go onto our property, hence it being tossed into the driveway from the road. They are glad we reported the incident and if those folks come back, especially if they come onto the property or make any trouble, then we should call.

I guess I'm a little comforted knowing we alone weren't targeted. Still. I don't want their dirty words in my driveway.
