  3. Excellent Ally news! Suddenly the weather turned warm here; we had snow in the mountains a couple of days ago, but (due to nonfunctional A/C) we drove all the way back home from Hayward (court appearance for me) with the windows open at least a bit and the fan on.

Here's an amusing opening from a Father Brown story, "The Arrow of Heaven:"

"It is to be feared that about a hundred detective stories have begun with the discovery that an American millionaire has been murdered; an event which is, for some reason, treated as a sort of calamity."

Daughter*in*Art*School seems to be tickled pink with her new iMac, and to tell the truth having seen it I am tempted to spend some money that should be coming in on a similar one. Well, we will see.

  4. Well, after two days of a fixed phone, just got dialtone back after two hours of no dialtone. Got it called in, and miracle of miracles, a repair order for *tomorrow* ~~ of course I now have the "greatly trubbled lines" repair number. . . Nice guy, though.

  5. I AM HOME FROM WORK! Yayyyyy!!! Now I have happy feet! :)

Are you having critter-chewing-the-line trubbles, puddle?
It seems cray that it fizzled out so soon after they "fixed" it.

    Hi Alan! Great quote! LOL!

Wow, it's windy here tonight! Spooky-windy. As I drove home I could see the clouds over the Adirondacks and flashes of lightning over on the NY side. This is what happens when a cold front moves in. 8-)

  6. It's never anywhere near me. According to the guy I talked to today, the Dec 10 fix was right at HQ -- a "dial tone card" . . . .

  8. Hubby is in Maine for a few days, to help Daughter install a stone tile floor in her new downstairs half-bathroom. Enroute there today he drove through the town in NH where he grew up. He was checking messages at home, incase there were work-related messages, just as he drove past the home of his childhood best friend, whom we haven't seen in about 32 years. Imagine his amazement as he listened to a voicemail message from that very person, who happens to be up here in Burlington visiting his daughter this weekend! What were the odds?! We all plan a reunion soon.

  9. Palin, the former vice presidential candidate, has not been shy about criticizing Obama's policies and this week weighed in on his revamped nuclear strategy, saying it was like a child in a playground who says 'punch me in the face, I'm not going to retaliate.'

"I really have no response to that. The last I checked, Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on nuclear issues," Obama said in an interview with ABC News.

Pressed further on Republican criticism that his strategy restricts the use of nuclear weapons too much, Obama added:

"What I would say to them is, is that if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff are comfortable with it, I'm probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin."

  12. Just checked the last thread.

Wow, Bill. You remember my thoughts better than I do myself. Indeed, Katelyn's enthusiasm for acquiring eyesight is what disturbed me about Wake. Thanks! *grin*

In The Neanderthal Parallax the idear does seem to be that strictly controlled population does maintain a stable ecosystem and thus optimal levels of prey animals and gatherable food stuffs. And yet, we never actually see anybody hunting or gathering. I'm not sorry to have red the series, but, though the conceit is an interesting one, I don't really think it's, hmmm, masterpiece level.

Forgive a stupid question. How does a book get on the Hugo ballot?
