    1. Alan, I have always suspected these accounts of extreme old age. I don't know whether there's an age limit to human longevity or not, but I suspect any account that isn't backed by evidence. -- nordy

    1. It occurs to me that it would be more newsworthy if he were to say something hinged, rather than unhinged.

    2. H.L. Mencken:

As democracy is perfected, the office [of president] represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people…On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
Baltimore Evening Sun 26 July 1920

No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby. The mistake that is made always runs the other way. Because the plain people are able to speak and understand, and even, in many cases, to read and write, it is assumed that they have ideas in their heads, and an appetite for more. This assumption is a folly.

  8. PBS is offering a John Rutter holiday special that is highly worthwhile. Amazing music and nicely decorated. Nothing else we've tried compared. Enjoy!
