I have a cat who stays inside, and I've wondered about this issue for some time. NYT reports we are loving our animals to death.
Now some animal welfare ethicists and veterinary scientists are wondering if, in our efforts to humanize our pets, we’ve gone too far. The more we treat pets like people, they argue, the more constrained and dependent on us our pets’ lives have become, and the more health and behavioral issues our pets develop. --nordy
That sounds like some sort of new fad. My indoor cats might not be as exercised as outdoor cats but, were they outdoor cats, by now my two 12 year old cats would be long dead. One had asthma as a kitten and the other is mostly white. Here in the country, Mizzen would have been outrun and Spinnaker could not hide. So, even were it true that outdoor cats are healthier for some reason, that wouldn't have helped them be alive. That said, I also believe my indoor cats are far healthier. No worms, no fleas and they've never needed a drain in their back due to an infected wound from a wild animal...as happened to the outdoor cat we had who lived the longest (16.5years). And even that is assuming they lived long enough to get wounded by a wild animal. We lost one who was hit by a car on a very windy day (so never heard the car coming).

Well, it's true Oak Park has gotten rid of its coyotes. Then there was the "large rodent" reported rifling dumpsters in Chicago's River North area. It was the type of large rodent known as a beaver.
Late last evening, here in the country, Spinnaker kitty suddenly sat up straight, listened, then ran upstairs. I thought she had simply heard Mizzen making noise in the entryway. As I walked down the hallway, it sounded like she had gotten stuck in the entryway closet and was pawing at the door to get out. I opened the closet door and there was no one there. Then I heard, to my right, the same sound and saw the front screen door move to open a little, then close, then open. It freaked me out a little, since it wasn't wind related. I looked out the door and there was a mid-sized raccoon, trying to open the door!! I seriously would not expect a raccoon to try to come inside our house. All I can think is that it thought maybe this was a chicken coop? Anyway, a few shakes of the doorknob and off it went...then came back and tried again. Rinse, repeat, and off it ran.

As the day progressed, cloud coverage became more extensive and eventually (in midafternoon) we had the slightest bit of rain. No breeze any time today ----Alan
