The Dems and GOP have purposely made it almost impossible for third parties to gain ballot access. But perhaps jungle primaries could serve as a transition state. Will have to see if any states other than California have them at this time. [Note: no jungle primaries permitted for President at this time.] ----Alan
I very much like ranked choice voting. First enountered it for collegiate student government in '64. For decades I've used it in voting for the Hugo awards and the site of future Worldcons. It ends worries about candidates splitting the vote. In 2013 there were three candidates for site of the 2025 Worldcon. Helsinki got the most first-place votes but most of the people who voted for Orlando made Spokane their second choice, so Spokane won.
Drug that ‘melts away’ tumours could replace surgery for bowel cancer, say doctors [Click] Note from my experience and study: postsurgical radiation treatments are often done, but they can cause serious problems and are very frequently unhelpful. I and my oncologist agreed that wait-and-see following chemoradiation and surgery was the most rational approach. It worked. That last week or ten days of chemoradiation was the worst part of my treatment. ——Alan
Got my COVID booster and the updated shingles vaccine yesterday. Seemed a bit weaker than usual last night and have now slept most of the day, but no other side effects.
While taking a bath this evening I began to recall a visit to a very small hot spring resort deep in the mountains and woods "near" my good wife's home town. I can't recall if the road was paved or not, but it was small, winding through deep woods and by a small river. Eventually we came to the hot spring resort, built at the base of a rock wall, with a tall and sturdy steel fence to keep the winter snows from crushing it or sweeping it away. The hot pool was in the native rock, and the water was almost too hot to bear; one had to very slowly ease into it, and couldn't stay there long. Riding up there through the woods was so very beautiful, and I felt like it must have been much the same for hundreds or thousands of years, perhaps even when first seen by humans passing through. ---Alan
Quote of the Day June 2, 2024 at 3:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard “I don’t know that the public would stand it. You know, I don’t… I’m not sure the public would stand for it. I think it would be tough for the public to take. You know, at a certain point, there’s a breaking point.” — Donald Trump, in an interview on Fox News, about possibly being sentenced to prison.
Video: Brian Taylor Cohen interviews Norm Eisen re possible prison sentence for Trump [26 minutes]. [Click] I noticed that Mr. Eisen figures, as I have for a long time, that the future US center-right political nexus will emerge in the Democratic Party. In other words, the Grand Old Party will follow the Whigs onto the political garbage heap.
