    1. Just like tuberculosis, syphilis has been ignored in recent decades. In many states testing in order to get a marriage license has long been discontinued. I remember stories from the days before penicillin.

    2. California had no such testing requirement in 1965

    3. As memory serves me, we were still doing them in 1976. Perhaps it could have depended on the county.

    4. Coud be. It's possible that Penny and I had to sign statements that we were disease-free, but I definitely don't remember taking a test.

    1. That is very impressive indeed. What a great ending to a harsh ordeal.

  5. Curious thing happened this morning. Publisher's Clearinghouse called, and informed me I was their winner. I hung up of course, but, oddly, not one thing they "promised" me was anything I wanted, at all. Hell, I couldn't even get a Mercedes' oil changed in this county! I know, I tried.

    1. I thought they showed up at the winners' homes with a camera crew. Maybe the camera crew was busy visiting a Nigerian prince.

    2. I'll believe it when I see it. This part of the Pioneer Valley is quite sheltered, so we seldom get storms in the predicted intensity.

    1. 28 is pretty elderly for a cat. Sweet to hear she's still doing so well.

    1. When I read the title of that first item you posted, Alan, I thought it meant House Republicans said no to yet another bill. I hadn't heard Scalise will soon be out awhile. Have they said how long? That's a serious treatment, but often yields good results.

    1. The young lawyer Jones was very interesting, but Harry is a blowhard who doesn't know when to shut up. The kid could have explained it all simply and at far less length if allowed to do so. Still, thanks for the link. It was helpful to hear the premise from the horse's mouth.
