    2. Thanks---that sounds very reasonable; but Democrats wouldn't be Democrats if they weren't wringing their hands. I am reminded of Will Rogers: "I'm not a member of an organized political party--I'm a Democrat."

    1. She had quite a run, that's for sure. Newsom ought to act quickly to appoint her interim replacement; he ought to be able to honor his word to appoint a black woman without choosing one of the current candidates for the seat or decreasing the number of Democrats in the House.

    2. I favor Katie Porter. Her skills are wasted on the House.

    3. There are two problems with naming Porter as the interim Senator pending next year's election. One is that, pending some sort of special election, there will be one less Democrat in the House. The other is that it would clearly be seen as supporting Porter in the 2024 Senatorial election. A couple of us here favor Lee.

    4. Lately Porter has IMO been showing more promise as Senatorial timber. She's still rather young in congresscritter years, though. For the governor to appoint one of the declared candidates would be seen as putting his thumb on the scale, and might be unhelpful overall. There are several well-known and prominent Black female office holders [either former or current] in California who could serve both well and temporarily.

    5. But if we wait for the 2024 election there won't be a gaping hole in the Democratic House caucus.

  3. Went to bed at nine thirty this morning, lay in bed, got the cat to get in bed with me and petted her for a couple of hours, decided to get up and check with the pharmacy 'cause they'd left a phone message that something was about to expire, and they, like lots of businesses here close for lunch from noon till one. Funny that; as strange as that seemed when I got here, it seems that normal now.

Alan, thanks for the clickifying that you do for me. xox

“Speaker Hakeem Jeffries” sounds pretty good, but I am sure he has enough sense to not accept promotion to Captain of the Titanic after hitting the iceberg. My crystal ball is rather cloudy today, but I figure things don’t look good for the GOP.

  8. I got the new coronavirus vaccine today, so am vaccinated to the full extent of the law for all notable pneumonias: pneumococcus (several years ago), RSV, influenza, and Covid. Just like the other day, a significant (but not really long) line for the flu vaccine, but no wait for Covid; some people getting both in the same visit. And hardly a mask to be seen other than mine.
