    1. I initially wondered how this was compatible with China facing populatiaon decline. But the focus is on a shortage of "good jobs" for people with higher education, in large part because China's economy is no longer expanding at the rate seen in previous decades. You could find analogies in teh US, including how academic biomedical research opportunities evaporated just as I got my PhD.

  2. The Ukrainian armed forces seem to be continuing their shaping attacks on Russian logistics, troop concentrations, etc. as they are flanking Bakhmut and carrying out probing attacks in many places along the front lines to detect weak spots. Their main reserve forces remain in position to move into either
southern or eastern fronts, or both for that matter. Advances in the south have pushed through at least Russian first defensive lines. Disputes between Russian and Wagner forces are increasing.

    1. This is going to be a LONG closure. Route 1 will be a difficult alternative.

    2. Some years ago there was a similar incident on the confluence of the north-south Interstate along the east side of San Francisco Bay and the approaches to the Bay Bridge. They got it done way faster than expected; the prestressed concrete girders they used were so heavy they couldn't be moved from where they were fabricated on the other side of the mountains to the east on the site; they had to be moved on secondary dirt roads. I will see if I can find a story about it. As memory serves me there was a substantial bonus for early completion.

    3. Bay Area freeway repair speeds into the fast lane [Click] As I recall the driver of the tanker was not experienced at handling partial loads.
