    2. So two birthdays in a row. Hope it's a happy one, Cat. And yes, that cake is amazing.

  2. It's pretty awful that no one gets paid until they're sworn in...including their staff.

    2. Reading the story, I saw another headline (I have yet to read its story):
"Lebanon officials consider turning former dealership into charitable casino"
Leaving aside the incongruity of a casino being charitable, dealing with an auto dealership has a reputation as high-stakes gambling; so a cynical person (not me, certainly--I just have a warped sense of humor) might suggest that "Gambling venue change of ownership" might be more accurate. Now to investigate.

  3. On the bright side, they can't do anything *to* their constituents either. And a very happy birthday to Cat.

  5. Clear sky this morning, with just the slightest touch of fog in the river bottom.

NYT via politicalwire.com: A Ragged GOP Stumbles Through the Wilderness [Click]

From elsewhere: “McCarthy’s new problem is that ‘at least three’ Republican members will be absent today.” Would that there might be enough absences to make 212 the winning number!

    1. Unsurprisingly, Google Images has photos of proposed trillion dollar coins; I found two designs I considered attractive--one with a distinctive size and shape (like a paper bill), which seems reasonable.

    2. Well, if the past few days have been an example of how they plan to seize power, I reckon we're safe. They can't even elect a Speaker. Wonder if they've found the restrooms and the gym yet?

      Delete
    3. Ah, the illusion of power! Reps keep talking about governing as if they do not realize they are mere agents.

    4. Well, finding both restrooms AND the gym might be rather too much for suche a short period of time, I think.

    2. 12th ballot (longest contest since 1859):

      McCarthy 188
      Jordan 4
      Hern (R) 3
      Jeffries 186

    3. Did I miss something? I thought Jefferies had a solid 212?

      Delete
    4. He did. Those numbers weren't the final total.
I think Jeffries got only 211 in the 12th vote, because someone was away.

Jeffries got 212 in the 13th vote.
McCarthy is gaining and got 214. He needed 216. So, we'll see.

They return at 10pm tonight for the 14th vote. I think two members would have to vote "present" for 216 him to get enough.

    6. I mentioned to Sis that the House planned to resume at 10:00 PM, with the observation that perhaps the thought was that everybody who did not want to vote for McCarthy would be home in bed by then. She responded that it might be a total disaster, with *everybody* home in bed. We can but hope.

  11. Beautiful day today, a little warmer, blue sky, and white clouds. Neighbors said there was 12 feet of snow on the ground at Huntington Lake (elevation seven thousand feet), where they have a cabin, but they weren't able to get up there today to deal with it and another three feet is expected tonight and tomorrow, which they are afraid might crush their cabin. Coming home just now along the expressway, which gives a good view to the east and southeast, the mountains are just a wall or white--I haven't seen anything like it in years and years. The view from our back yard is to the the north and northeast, and the snow isn't so heavy in that direction.

  12. The Chaos Continues

McCarthy is one vote shy of a Speakership and Matt Gaetz is why.

I'd be thrilled if he didn't win the Speakership on January 6th of all days.

Gaetz wants to adjourn until Monday.

The rats are consuming one another.

  14. Kevin McCarthy Fails Again in Speaker Vote
January 6, 2023 at 11:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) lost a vote for speaker for the 14th time in a dramatic scene where Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) held out to be the deciding vote.
Gaetz ended up voting present to deny McCarthy.

Close but no cigar. I wonder if Mr. Gaez might go for a ride. . .

  15. I see rumors that Barbara Lee and Katie Porter (she of the whiteboard) are expected to campaign for Senator Feinstein's seat after she declines to run again. Barbara Lee speaks for me, and has for a very long time--but she is as old as I, and I am slowing down some. A quick perusal of Katie Porter's positions as described on her House web page is very promising, if somewhat overwhelming. I wonder if she will campaign in Fresno.

  16. It nearly came to blows on the Republican side. Shouting, and one guy had to be restrained.

CNN then reported that during the melee, DT was phoning members to push for McCarthy.

John King of CNN then said that history books will have a lot to say about January 6th. How two years ago DT tried to steal the election and today DT sought to influence McCarthy's speakership.

  17. Biggs voted "present" in this 15th vote, so this time McCarthy has the votes.
But at least he won't be elected ON January 6th.

It's still a travesty!! What a dangerous time this is.
