Currently (8AM) 40F, predicted high 50F with light rain in the afternoon but I have my doubts--the clouds are thin. Good view of the Sierra Nevada crest--definitely more snow up there than before the latest storm. ---Alan
“In the two years since a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, prosecutors have secured guilty pleas from more than half the rioters they have charged, helping lead to a 99.8% conviction rate,” the Wall Street Journal reports. Works for me.----Alan
The clouds have thickened, and the wind from the mountains is both stronger and colder; we shall skip our constitutional today. There are reports that the floodwaters in the Sacramento area have receded and Hwy 99 is (at least for now) reopened, with more rain in the forecast. ---Alan
A long time ago I visited Sutter's Fort, which was the nucleus of Sacramento, and was struck by how low it was; it was built on just slightly higher ground at the intersection of two rivers (Sacramento and American). In the late 19th Century hydraulic gold mining dumped so much dirt into the rivers of the Sacramento Valley that the riverside cities had to be protected by progressively higher levees, which are now stupendous--- quite comparable, I think, to the levees on the lower Mississippi River. -----Alan
Gee, they sure are having lots of rain and flooding out there in California! [According to the TV news.] Here there is enough rain that I think I will skip putting out turkey leftovers for the possums tonight (current time = 5:30 PM). Off and on light rain interspersed with dry periods for the next ten days. Rain should let up by midnight tonight for about a day and a half. Maybe I will put out some possum food if I am still up at MN and the rain has stopped. ---Alan
Which reminds me of an observation about Putin's War: it sure didn't start out that way, but the Ukrainian army now appears to be far more mechanized than the Russian army (thanks in no small part to lend-lease armored vehicles from Russia). The Ukrainians are also far better at combined operations--armor, infantry, artillery, etc. ---Alan
Sis got me a purbble [click]. It came about because her friend got her one, and we decided that one might help me too. He arrived today. His name is Patrick Aloysius. He is small and roundish, fuzzy and cuddly and makes interesting noises. I think he's going to be very helpful...along with evening primrose oil. :)
Great idear, Cat!! I wish I'd known of these. A good friend was in the ICU for a few days, and is now in a regular room at the medical center here. Hoping to go home tomorrow but fiercely missing her two kitties!! I wish I could have sent her a purrble for the time between. Might have to get one to keep on hand!

But if they're not properly maintained, they don't do any good.
DeleteAnother great photo.
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks! (Be sure to check the archive for this week last year!)

Today's high here was forecast to be 50 degrees. Don't know if we made that, but this afternoon was quite mild.
DeleteThe Ukrainians are a lot more motivated than the Russians at the moment.
