{listener} We do not like no snow in Winter, and January will be warmer than usual. Instead of minus temps, we could have ice storms. We could end up with poisonous critters migrating north yet.
“The storm is expected to reach the pressure equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane as it reaches the Great Lakes, with the weather service describing the strength of the low a ‘once-in-a-generation’ event.”
This seems like a fairly good article about the earthquake in northern California [Click] Some discussion of how common such earthquakes are in the area. That one bridge that was damaged is described as “historic,” which is a polite way of saying old and not built to modern standards. Anyone should know to secure book cases to studs in the wall and to fasten the frames of houses to their foundations. Unreinforced masonry and masonry-exterior buildings are notoriously susceptible to earthquake damage, but in that area most such buildings have been repeatedly tested over the years. ----Alan
I stand corrected [Click] The damaged bridge is in fact historical. The photos I saw online seem to show that one of the approaches built in 1920 failed, not the bridge proper. ---Alan
It is. I hear Chicago will be hard hit. Do take care. Our rough day, here, is Friday. I'm on the western slopes of the Green Mountains, where we are expecting heavy rain, flooding, and 70+mph wind gusts, followed by a flash freeze and maybe an inch of snow.
Incidentally, I just got a price quote on my new glasses. Went up more than I expected, maybe in part because to the fancier telescope. It's a bit over $2200. They're guessing it may take a month before the glasses are delivered.

This describes a recipe very much like the carrot puddings my mother made for Christmas every year. I have never made one because the old one-pound coffee tins (with tops that were removed with a key like that of a corned beef tin) that she used for steaming them disappeared. But this recipe describes (and shows how to use) a PUDDING BASIN! It is on its way from Amazon! And I have my mother's recipe--also her fruit cake recipe (which she stopped making because the ingredients became too expensive) and her non-alcoholic "hard sauce.' ---Alan
The Atlantic: Boston Is Losing Its Snow Wicked Fast; New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on Earth. [Click] The warming Pacific Ocean seems to have at least helped to destroy the kelp forest ecosystem along the West Coast.

That said, first things first:
The immediate future hold this powerful storm!

So isn't tomorrow the first day of winter? Appropriately, Chicago is bracing for a blizzerd.
ReplyDeleteWinter began at 4:47pm today. I'm there, you're there and Alan soon will be.
DeleteSo tomorrow, when the blizzerd hits, is the frist full day of winter.

DeleteI have no reason to go outside the house for the next several days. And as of yesterday Marcus has a snow blower to deal with what's coming down.

ReplyDeleteThat's steep, all right. But if you need it, you need it.

Yeah. Go for it, Bill. Mine costs half that anyway, for regular lenses and sunglasses together.
