I figured out why I couldn’t post any of these videos— the Internet gods didn’t like the last four letters of the bird’s common name.

  3. I'm home! Nothing amiss occurred. In fact, many people came up to ask me about the stray cat I posted about on our local forum. We're up to 5 people willing to adopt the cat if no owner is found.

    I love this town!

  4. Good turnout here! Interesting that there were a LOT of people who hand carried their mailed ballot in to drop it off today. Some even turned it in to get a fresh ballot, because they love the feeling of voting in person. I think at least one was suspicious of the mailed ballots. LOL. Then, too, some never got a mailed ballot, so the system still needs some tweaking.

One good citizen told us she got two ballots because she moved and the State sent one to both addresses (and it was forwarded from the old address). So that error got amended...which happens with honest citizenry.

    1. Folks who lost their mailed ballot or forgot to bring it along had to sign an affidavit saying they had not yet voted. I was amazed how many of those we had. I guess it'll be awhile before Vote By Mail is the chief way people vote here. It's kind of a social thing in such a small town, really.

    2. Just to add that voting is taking place at the high school and students there are NOT comfortable with the front door being left unlocked all day.

And they live with that underlying fear every day.

That anxiety of the high school students reminds me all too well of our anxiety about nuclear war when I was their age. I specifically remember coming out of school to get on the bus during the Cuban Missile Crisis and looking up in the sky, wondering if we would be able to see the warhead falling before the blast, or just be incinerated in the flash of light.

P.S.: The voting by mail will become routine in time. But I will admit that the social aspect of voting in person was enjoyable as long as there wasn't a lot of standing in line.

The last minute election hullabaloo seems strange to me, coming three weeks after I voted. That said, I remember reading about Lincoln awaiting the results of the 1864 election at the (Navy?) telegraph office. I think it was about midnight when the results became clear except for a small number of races where the results were so close that their outcomes wouldn't be clear for a day or maybe two and wouldn’t make any big difference, whereupon he went back up to the White House.

    2. Thanks for the posting, listener. I have an old browser that enables me to get past most paywalls; I remember you saying that if you have the original title you can usually find the story or column.

  8. Bakd home. Train got in about a quarter to nine, almost an hour early. I'm now unpacked and have had a nice long nap. While I was gone I checked that my mail ballot had been received October 30. On arriving at the station I discovered that there was a polling location there for all suburban Cook County voters. If I had known I might have voted there instead of by mail.

You were wise to vote in advance...just incase there was an issue with travel plans.

Some intermittent light rain here today; thunderstorms predicted late afternoon and evening.

I was just reading a small bit about Magellan's voyage-- the one ship remaining of the original five returned 500 years ago (to be precise, Sept. 8th 1522). Eighteen returned of the 240 who had set out. I remember that the boarding party from the ship that saw the Victoria approaching Spain thought at first that all the crew members were dead--the survivors were too weak to stand, much less to work the sails, which were torn, flapping and not properly turned to the wind. But the cargo of spices was worth enough to turn a profit for the whole expedition. As memory serves me, a regular seaman's share was one pound of spices, which was enough to build a house and retire on. While crossing the Indian Ocean fifty years later Drake captured a Dutch spice ship; the Queen's half share was worth more in London than the crown's entire income for the previous year-- which interested Elizabeth and her government greatly. . .

  10. Exit polls: Voter views on Trump are even more negative than on Biden
    From CNN's Ariel Edwards-Levy
While voters in this year’s midterm election hold negative views of President Joe Biden, their views of his predecessor are even more negative, according to the preliminary national results of the exit poll conducted for CNN and other news networks by Edison Research.

Only about 37% of voters in this year’s midterms expressed a favorable view of former President Donald Trump, with around 6 in 10 viewing him unfavorably. About 16% of voters said their House vote this year was intended to express support for Trump, with just under 3 in 10 saying it was intended to express opposition and the rest saying that Trump was not a factor.

Voters’ opinions of the GOP were slightly more positive than their views of Trump, with about 43% viewing the Republican Party favorably and just over half viewing it unfavorably. More than half, about 54%, say the GOP is too extreme.
