There was snow on the way both to and from Minicon. On Thursday night it started about an hour north of Madison and had essentially stopped by the time we got to the Twin Cities. The prediction had apparently been for no accumulation but there was perhaps enough to be measurable in spots. Coming back it was snow all the way from Minneapolis to a bit south of Rockford, where it changed to rain. Accumulation was again just enough to be measurable.
There doesn't seem to have been any snow in the Chicago area, but the date of our last snowfall can be extremely variable. There have apparently been a few years when there was no snowfall past February and one when it snowed in May.
Hey! Today I had my annual Wellness visit with my primary care doc. Turns out I lost 9lbs in the past year and that likely bodes well for my bloodwork. Stay tuned. But it suuuure was nice to have some Easter treats after that visit! Most of all, it means so much to me that I have made it to retirement healthy. I don't take that for granted and will work to keep it so.
I am so angry at Russia. ALL of Russia. I am not even feeling much compassion for the dumb fools who allow themselves to remain in the dark about what's going on in the rest of the world. I guess that's because forgiveness requires some measure of repentance.
2000 years ago the word (from the cross) was: "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." How much is that still valid in the information age? But then, I am not the best person on the planet.
I continue to wonder if Putin will be overthrown by another revolution--several things in Russia look SO much like the lead-up to the revolution of a century ago. The economic pressures being brought to bear on Russia will take time to be fully felt, but they are massive and agur to become a good deal worse. They can probably be forestalled for a couple of years, but not much longer than that. We will suffer too; higher gasoline and food prices, for instance--but that is NOTHING compared to what the Ukrainians are enduring and will endure. Maybe it will move the US government to do at least some of what should long ago have been done for the poorest among us.
God, I hope Putin is overthrown and soon. I understand everyone is holding back out of fear of triggering WWIII and causing Putin to use nukes. I understand that. But are we just supposed to stand by and watch while every building in Ukraine is turned into a pile of rubble and civilian bodies pile up in the streets? There *must* be a way to stop him.
He seems to take considerable precautions against assassination, but that doesn't preclude the Nicholas II treatment. A argument has been made that there are very few people in Russia with the experience necessary to lead government ministries-- but that didn't stop the Bolsheviki.
Today at an eye appointment I said, "Hey! What did I do with my glasses?" They were *on my face*. This kind of stuff scares me crazy because I fear dementia.
I have done that, Susan, if it's any comfort. Not in the eye doc's office, but it's my turn next month and anything's possible! For me, it's that I see just fine up to 14" from my face, so I often have my eyeglasses atop my head. And everything looks normal. So when I have my eyeglasses on and everything looks normal I often reach atop my head and, of course, don't find them there. Then I'm looking at all the usual surfaces and begin to think I've really misplaced them this time...and it isn't until I encounter a mirror that I find them. It's really how I'm seeing at the time that trips me up. But in the eye doc's office, one is already vulnerable and a little rattled. You're allowed. And you're sane and normal. We'll vouch for ya!
So I'm back from Minicon and have mostly caught up on sleep after the overnight bus trip from Madison. (A friend drove Jay and me from Minneapolis to his home in Madison.) It was a good con. I was on six panels, which was about the right number, and saw several Twin Cities friends. The one disappointment was that I'd hoped to find Laphroaig Triple Wood Scotch at the liquor store near the con where I bought it in 2019, but it was apparently a one-off bottling that is no longer available except at "collectors'" sites at $200 a bottle.
Very likely. My friend found one similar listing in the Twin Cities, but when he called they discovered they were out of it and apparently had been since 2017. This price is about what I paid in 2019.
No indication that they are out of stock at the $69 place, although I didn't go quite as far as starting to place an order (just put a bottle into my online cart).
Snowing like crazy here in SW Ohio.
ReplyDeleteLate in the year for that, isn't it?
DeleteYes, but it has happened in prior years.
DeleteHow much snow did you get, Susan?
DeleteOn the Vermont interstate today there was an electronic sign that read: Snow Possible Tomorrow: Prepare Ahead.
I think it'll just be an inch or two mostly, but up to 8" in the higher elevations.

ReplyDeleteNah, that's just the result of thinking deep thoughts.

DeleteHmm. Well, I did place the order. They say in two days I will get an email about shipping costs. We'll see what that says.
DeleteGood luck! Shipping costs for two bottles (or maybe even three) might not be much more than for one, if my experience is any guide.
DeleteI love how this came together! Well done, Alan. I'm tickled for you, Bill.
