  1. If the JWST should last for twenty years, the catalogue of its discoveries must be mind boggling. Who knows, I might live that long.

    1. I sure wish DT's world would crumble a little faster. One thing I appreciate about The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is that he refuses to say that person's name. I refuse as well. I would prefer to never ever have to even have a thought related to him again. In fact, I have felt that way long before he ran for anything, since the first time I ever heard his voice and it made me ill.

    2. I think it is possible to feel at least a momentary twinge of compassion for the man if one seriously considers for a moment the (to me seemingly clear) evidence that he belongs in a memory care facility. I have had three close relatives who became senile, and have encountered others.

    3. Of course.

It does not excuse the destruction he has wrought.

One can have mercy as well as justice. I’m even okay with the punishment being less than the crime. But the greatest thing anyone can do for someone destructive is to stop them from doing more destruction. It gives them less to have to answer for, so is a great kindness.

    4. Certainly it does not undo his actions or obviate consequences. I very purposely used the word "compassion," which is not necessarily merciful or otherwise "nice," but rather what the person needs to progress. In Mahayana/Tantric Buddhist iconography the embodiment of Compassion is Kannon (properly depicted as male, the complement of Wisdom (Daiseishi, depicted as female). Usually Kannon is depicted as mild, nice, effeminate, often gold-colored. Occasionally he is depicted as a horrendous horse-headed demon--when that would be the thing that benefits the suppliant. I once saw a medieval statue of the horse-headed Kannon up close--about seven feet tall, with bulging muscles, veins standing out, wielding a big club, lips curled back to display his teeth, etc. That's one of the ways Compassion can manifest--but one must be prepared to benefit from it. And I see no indication that the previous guy is ready.

    1. Johnson throws parties during a pandemic and will pay for it. And soon.

DT wreaks havoc on American democracy for years and has yet to pay for anything.

    2. I have heard, hard though it is to believe, that Civics education in grade school has diminished greatly since we were young.

    3. This is not hard to believe at all. It's evident!

Makes me so glad we home schooled. Part of our Civics class was working for two years to pass the home school legislation. Our children went to the Statehouse multiple times, spoke with legislators, put on a Home Schoolers' Day at the Statehouse and much more. They followed a bill from conception to it being signed into law...with all the ups and downs along the way, seeing the work of Legislative Counsel, committees, learning about crossover, etc., etc., and even meeting the Governor. They are all still politically active, as a result.

    1. Bernie is spot on, as ever.

Today we went to the Vermont Teddy Bear Company and bought some Bernie Mittens for our nephew's birthday. They cost $49.99/pair (!!!) but are extremely well made and a big portion goes to charity.

  6. New York Times: “More and more states have passed a peak in new cases in recent days, as glimmers of progress have spread from a handful of eastern cities to much of the country.”

And yet: “The United States continues to identify far more infections a day than in any prior surge, and some states in the West, South and Great Plains are still seeing sharp increases. Many hospitals are full. And deaths continue to mount, with more than 2,100 announced most days.”

    1. Still, there is “renewed hope” that the end of the pandemic might be in sight, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, the director of the Ohio Department of Health, said at a news conference on Thursday. And I have renewed hope that I will win the Irish Sweepstakes.

    1. There is definitely a housing crisis. Up our way it translates to towns allowing more building. When we first moved here 39 years ago, you could not build a house on less than 10 acres. Then the town rezoned some areas so that folks could build on 5 acres, then 1 acre, and now they are passing a rule that a homeowner with at least an acre can add a house on their property. Also, condos are springing up in parts of town.

While I am sad to see so much of what was open land being taken and wildlife displaced, it also can't be helped if everyone is to have housing. However! The town is preserving large areas of land at the same time, making a wildlife corridor, and preserving certain views for all comers. It helps.

  8. Tension building with Russia. Putin is sending 140 warships out (allegedly on a "training" exercises), including some into the Black Sea.
