  2. It seems that The Great Freeze of '22 is over; no frost this morning. And on another note, Santa Claus brought me a box of Jaffa Cakes this Christmas just past; I had never had them before, and really like them. Unlike shortbread or garibaldi cookies/biscuits, one or two satisfies--there is no temptation to eat the entire box at once.

    1. I'd never heard of them, so looked them up. They sound yummy!

And, incase you run out, here's a recipe!

I think the next step is to swing the two side extensions of the primary mirror into place.

    1. Correction: Next comes depoloyment of the aft radiator, then the primary mirror wings are swung into place, one at a time.

    1. I think any jury in this matter ought to have at least one (if not several) people on it who understand abuse from that side of the situation. I'm sure the defendant's lawyers would disagree. But the abused deserve to be represented.

    1. Actually, it has been found that posture is more distinctive and identifiable than facial chracteristics. The relationship between the back of the head and the shoulders is a constant identifier. And probably impossible to disguise.

    2. That's interesting; thanks for the heads-up.

    3. People can routinely recognize me in convention photos taken from my back. But that's greatly aided by the cord I use to drape my glasses around my neck when I take them off.

  6. Well, they wouldn't, would they. All of Epstein's and Maxwell's victims were female. That males are victimized as much as females faces an even greater taboo. Respect for privacy and bodily integrigy is not a high cultural priority.
When I was a guardian ad litem, one of the most horrific cases that came into court involved a six or seven year old boy whose intestines were compacted and needed to be surgically addressed because his father responded to his incontinence by shoving a stick up the boy's rectum.
And, of course, these matter was handled in a closed court so the community would not be aware of it. Ditto for the Muslim girls whose abuse by their father was considered a "cultural difference" which U.S. law considers criminal. Social workers thought that should be taken into account.

    1. Thank you for being there for that little boy. 😞 Please tell me he was removed from his father.

  8. Thankfully I'm almost all better now, but I've decided I should share my story as data point about what a sneaky &#@% Omicron seems to be. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

We were all set to travel for Christmas, and then I developed what seemed to be a cold (sore throat, stuffy nose). On December 22 we were getting ready to take pets to their respective sitters, and I decided I'd better take a COVID test before we commit to moving forward with our weekend plans. The test was negative, so we moved forward with our trip preparation.

On Thursday the 23rd, when we were supposed to travel, I felt worse rather than better. Still none of the traditional COVID symptoms I'd heard about, but more congested than the day before. At pretty much the last possible minute we postponed our trip. On Sunday, Demetrius started showing symptoms. Neither of us had a fever. On Tuesday, I heard about a couple people locally who had tested positive with the same symptoms we had. Armed with this new information, we decided we should both take a test. We were both positive.

TL;DR I tested negative, had symptoms consistent with a cold, and had good reason to believe it wasn't COVID. But it turned out to be COVID.

    1. Any lab test has false positives and false negatives; they can be made to lean one way or the other depending on the use to which they will be put, and of course there are sensitivity issues as well. Long story short, their results are not gospel.

  9. Naomi and I saw "The King's Man" (2021), which is a prequel to "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (2014) and "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" (2017). The lot of them are rated R, but it seems the earlier two are awash in gratuitous violence. I wouldn't take a child to see "The King's Man," but the violence is neither gratuitous nor intolerable. It is awash with historical references, naturally enough modified within the bounds of permissible artistic license.

    1. Note: Rasputin is played by the same actor who played Luna Lovegood's father in the Harry Potter movies. Despite the impression one might get from the trailer, his is not a major character. Interesting, though.
