  1. You know it’s icy when:

HINESBURG, VERMONT (a bit south of Burlington)

    *******TRAFFIC ALERT*******
Route 116 at Billings Farm Rd (north of CVU light) due to black ice that caused a fire truck and several vehicles to crash. State plow truck is also disabled in the roadway.

Avoid travel if possible. Be safe.

    1. The ice line is much more to the north than was predicted.

    2. Here the sky began to clear before sundown yesterday; consequently we have fog this morning, which is thinning now. It should be reasonably good gardening weather in the afternoon.

    3. Yeah, that's incredibly rare. And even for a fire truck.

    4. My imagination suggests sand dispensers in front of the wheels, as on a locomotive.

    5. It's cleared up now. Weather warmed enough to melt the ice and the roads now have been tended. It was just that the storm came further north than predicted so the roads weren't prepped up here. Anything wet will freeze solid again the next few days, but the roads should be fine. I'd watch out for black ice, just the same, as we're looking at -10ยบF Monday night. YES!! No Black Widow Spiders need migrate north! Haha!

  2. Wikipedia informs me that today is the anniversary of the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake. [Click] It is reported to have broken a few chimneys (which were very poorly built in those days) in Fresno. It is the only earthquake in history to have caused significant damage hereabouts.

    1. The earthquake waves don't propagate for long distances out here, compared to back east (I'm lookin' at you, New Madrid).

    2. Sorry, it let me in without a subscription and I thought it would let others in as well.

  5. It was nice weather for gardening this afternoon--no need for long johns. We finished cutting up the fruit tree prunings so they would fit well into the big trash can, and gave our two angels' trumpets (Brugmansia) their first pass. They are woody, but the wood is both soft and brittle.

  7. Ex-Trump Press Secretary Gave ‘a Lot of Names’
    January 9, 2022

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) told CNN that former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham named “a lot of names” during their phone call about the Capitol riots.
Raskin said she also “identified some lines of inquiry that had never occurred to me.”
He added: “America is going to be shocked and surprised at what we all come to learn this year.”

  8. “I am, as you know, a Black person, descended of people who were given the vote by the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The 15th amendment was not a bipartisan vote, it was a single party vote that gave Black people the right to vote. Manchin and others need to stop saying that because that gives me great pain for somebody to imply that the 15th Amendment of the United States Constitution is not legitimate because it did not have bipartisan buy-in.”
    — Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), quoted by Politico.
