LAT: Latino political power is a big winner in California’s new congressional map [Click] Potentially; but only if they vote in proportion to their numbers, which has not been typical. I haven’t found a good map of districts yet, but would not be surprised if the new districts, like the existing ones, were to dilute the political power of cities up and down the Central Valley. Typically they divide the cities like pies, with a geographically small section of city joined to a large suburban and rural section. I figure that I have more in common with other residents of my city and county than with rural residents in another county with which I am usually grouped.
But the coal mine *owners* give him lots of money. "The poor man's plaint is like water thrown on a stone; the rich man's plaint is like a stone thrown into water." Still, it is good that the miners are making their position known.
Hmmmmm. . . it occurs to me to wonder if Senator Manchin would be willing to meet with the President of the United States and the President of the United Mine Workers in the Oval Office. I think I will suggest it.
Mine owners and shop keepers have always been on the same side--the exploitation of labor. Remember the company store? Manchin has been heard to opine he didn't think poor people can be trusted with government money. He also does not approve of sick-pay 'cause he thinks people might pretend to be sick in order to go hunting. That sentiment ought to go over real well in the rural areas where hunting and fishing still provide necessary protein to the diet.
OK, so fact is that Congress is in charge of the Treasury. If they are looking for contributions from corporations, which are actually subsidiaries of governments, then they are soliciting kick-backs and the effort to influence voters is an extortion scheme. That both major parties participate in this extortion does not change the facts. The founders warned against factions and, indeed, self-designated interest groups have managed to manipulate the levers of government to serve special intersts. The agenda now that the electorate has woken up and developed the means to take the reins is to restrict the electorate by all possible means. And the press is in on it for the simple reason that the fourth estate also wants to be an influential player and continue to define who's qualified and who's not, based on his/her war chest. The commercial sector does not create value. It exploits labor and it exploits natural resources and when they are depleted, it moves on.
So the solstice was just about five minutes before I arrived home from DC.
ReplyDeleteWelcome home, Bill. I hope the weather was OK during your trip.
DeleteI eventually figured out that now only was my Chicago winter jacket too warm, but I didn't really need a jacket at all.

ReplyDeleteStopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
ReplyDeleteby ROBERT FROST, 1923
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
