  3. A light steady rain here this morning, no wind.

    1. Headline: Drenching storms ravage California, sparking floods and mudslides [Click] Wouldn’t know it here. But Fresno is just far enough north that particularly strong storms from up north give us a bit of rain, and particularly strong monsoon rains from southern California can do the same. The river hasn't visibly risen so far.

    2. 11AM; the rain has stopped, the sky is beginning to clear, and the visibility is outstanding. So much for our promised gullywasher.

    1. Correct, Renee. After her Mom died she sort of wandered away. But! She did come back here once to say hallo and post for a day, after I emailed to check on her. So, I think she's mostly okay, but doing a lot of reading and hopefully some writing.

We do miss her. And we love when you come by!

    1. Had a friend with no inner voice, discovered that was so in a convo with her adult daughter, where daughter said Well you know when the inner voice sez, then. . . . they talked about it, and Mary discovered she had none. she decided that extroverts don't have them and have to go out to find answers from others, while introverts do, and don't need to go out. . . .

  9. Wow again! The sky (and the air) has cleared wonderfully, and we can very clearly see a lot of snow on the highest part of the Sierra crest visible from here. Less snow at lower elevations, but still more than we have seen in a long time.

  12. A 100-Year-Old Priest Was Nudged From His Parish. He Has No Plan to Retire. [Click] “The Rev. Luis Urriza arrived in Beaumont, Texas, nearly 70 years ago and founded the thriving Cristo Rey parish. His religious order has now called him back to Spain.” Feelgood story of the day, I think,

  13. NYT headline: An Unexpected Pandemic Consequence Frustrates Florida’s Biggest City
"Jacksonville is one of dozens of U.S. cities that have struggled to pick up trash amid a labor shortage."

I recall reading more than once that garbage collectors have more on-the-job injuries and deaths than police or fire fighters.

  14. Venting session: I usually try not to get too personal on HEP, but *damn*... My youngest brother has lots of mental problems. He lived with us from 2002 to 2018. He is a classic hoarder with piles of stuff and goat paths through it if he has a path at all. When he moved out he left my garage packed full of his hoarded stuff. None of it really useful or functional, but he just *has* to collect things - curbs, dumpsters, whatever.

Now, my only sister is a year older than he is. I have not spoken to her for several years because she lived only four houses down from me and in a mad flurry sold her house and bought a condo. Never one word to me, though she told the rest of the family and even the women at The Pantry, but not me.

Last week I had a 20 yard dumpster delivered because I just can't deal anymore with the extremely over-stuffed condition of the garage. We couldn't even use the back door because of all the crud piled high in front of it.

So *now* sister and husband drive by yesterday to "look at their old house". And *knowing* my brother's situation what did they do but CALL HIM UP AND TELL HIM ABOUT THE DUMPSTER IN MY DRIVEWAY. They *had to know* it would set him off, and it did. Now he's all freaked out and cancelled his visit for tomorrow because he "can't bear to see all his stuff in the dumpster". (It's not ONLY his stuff). Son #2 and I loaded in a huge pile of random lumber and bed parts brother had piled up in the garage. At the bottom of the pile was a folded newspaper, still in the plastic wrapper from 2003. I can't see any reason for my sister to make that call other than to stir the pot and cause trouble. And SHE didn't have to live with his hoarding or his destruction of property.

    Can you utterly divorce siblings?

    1. In my family there have been cases of people moving and not telling others where (or when) they are going. With Facebook and such things it might be a little harder, but even so I think it could still be made to work.

    2. A hundred years ago it was a lot easier.

    3. Someone being a sibling doesn't mean they are compatible with you. Even if you share some memories from childhood, chances are you experienced them differently. None of us can do both sides of a relationship. It sounds to me like you gave more for your brother than he ever gave for you. And your sister doesn't get to ignore you all those years, while living so nearby, then assume she has the right to control what you do.

So, yes. Divorcing a sibling is called estrangement. Sometimes it's the most self respecting thing one can do. And, in fact, it might actually be the kindest thing you can do for the long term (rather than scream and throw things). In the spirit of "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" it may be that you would be so constantly driven to rancour by a person that you need distance to be able to let go of the pain and forgive them (which is for YOUR sake) but not forget (and be duped into it happening again). I think sometimes even that is too hard and the best we can do is when they die we pray that all the crap they did to us not be held against them as they stand before Holiness and see their faults plainly for the first time.

Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote that if the chaff of a person is burned away when they die and what is left is the good in them, she wondered if some people would still be recognisable.
