    1. Some people have a death wish. Whether for themselves or others does not seem to matter.
Avoiding disaster is a sign that one is special/saved. Saved by faith alone, without having to do anything. That's the ticket!

    2. I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right. It is indeed a similar mentality to that that sees works as unrelated to salvation. The lazy and smug man's way for sure.

  2. We have tickets for today's performance of Romeo & Juliet LIVE at the Globe Theatre in London! The show begins at 7:00p BST, so we'll be watching from home at 2:00pm EST, via a live-stream link. I love that they're offering this! I have been to the Globe on a tour (2006), but there wasn't a performance the day I was there.

    1. Actually, Alan, despite my immediate scoffing reaction, that is probably technically possible. Nowadays toasters can connect to the Internet for Pete's sake. A Chinese thermostat being able to change votes in an American voting machine is no more far fetched than that. Mind you, I doubt that it happened, but there's really no reason it couldn't.

    2. The paper backup would make vote switching extremely difficult, to say the least. Switching votes in the consolidated county count would be easier, but the paper backup would still allow an accurate recount.

    3. The spouse said it was thermometers. Now, while many public buildings do have their heating and cooling systems monitored remotely by Johnson Constrols, the conspiracy nuts seem to be stuck back in 2004 when, for example, proprietary unique software was purchased by the Secretary of State of Ohio, Ken Blackwell, and down-ballot positions were perceived to be inconsistent with the top of the ticket. Since then, while "machines" are electronic, they are stand-alone machines like desk-top computers and the actual voting locations are not electronically connected to a central office. In Georgia, for example, polling places tend to be in churches and, for multiple reasons, are frequently relocated. While this is annoying to election promoters who do not want to be redirecting voters. the practic does mitigate against central collusion and control.
Yes, the conspiracy freaks forgot about paper back-ups.

    4. We do not have internet-enabled light bulbs, doorbell, door lock, refrigerator, toaster or any such. Aside from using open networks that can be hacked, such things always awaken in me thoughts of said appliances developing artificial intelligence and conspiring to overthrow their self-appointed masters. I understand that most people who install such devices just accept the default password--which enables access by drive-by hackers.

  4. Well, rats. Our family physician, with whom we have been most pleased, has left our provider/hospital. I went looking through the available possibilities and selected the one who seemed most promising. Fingers crossed. I hate doctor shopping with a purple passion, but with our provider (Kaiser Permanente) we can change medicos at any time, no reason or explanation necessary.

    1. I empathize. Our long-term physician retired* a little over a year ago. For reasons mentioned here, the other physician available at that medical group did not inspire confidence, so I have very recently switched to an antirely new doctor -- a geriatric specialist.
*It wasn't officially announced as a retirement, but I'm pretty sure he was in his 60s.

    2. Our former family physician was also certified in geriatrics, which I considered a plus.

  5. The official weather report says that visibility is down to three miles; I doubt it is really that bad here, but it looks to be less than ten miles. The smoke seems to be thick enough to decrease the temperature, and the air quality index is climbing--currently 80.

  9. Have to laugh. Every time the camera gets our cast (G34) in the lens for the first time and Sydney's smoking on the bus, my gut sez NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT! When in actual fact, I know he could. You could in Washington, DC and Maryland until the mid sixties. And in grocery stores, department stores. hardware stores. I don't think libraries, but I could be wrong.

  11. Interesting. The paperweight she rescues in the beginning of the film has a blown glass ocean w/dolphin, bird could be also; the one on her desk as she types G&PPP is thin wood cutouts. Different base, too.

  12. Alan, our AQI is 51. Yours scares me for you, stay inside please.

    2. Current AQI = 108, "unhealthy for sensitive groups." That's us, all right!
