Soft Sunset

Meanwhile, back in DC in Statutory Hall, the National Guard is encamped.
It is the first time there has been an encampment of soldiers there since the Civil War.

  1. Jennifer Rubin: Trump’s future looks rotten [Click] Nice little summary. I keep wondering which country might give him political asylum; if he were to cough up enough cash in advance, I suppose there might be some small country that would do it.

    1. I gather he's strapped for cash at the moment. And the banks that used to be his best buddies are scuttling away from him ASAP.

    2. To make things even more interesting, as memory serves me at least some of Trump's big loans are guaranteed not by the specific properties, but by Trump himself, personally.

    1. I just looked at this post and realized that the title of the column is a pun on The Last Days of Pompeii [Click], which I discovered was written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton! [Click] He turned out, to my surprise, to have been a very interesting (and influential) fellow.

  6. There's a lot of talk about right wing extremists. To date I have heard not one word about reactionary, Trumpist "Catholics". I use the quotation marks advisedly. Anyhow, I know from having YouTube's logarithms put their videos on my recommendation page that there are several - probably more than several - such channels on YouTube. One in particular lands on my recommendations page with aggravating regularity, Life Site News. Last Thursday came the video I shared here of Leo Kelly telling his story, exclusively to Life Site News, of how he entered the Capitol and what he did there. I have reported the video...*twice*... and it's still there. Today there's one of the heroic rioter who tried to prevent windows from being broken. There are other videos with titles like Pastor Admonishes Parishioners Who Voted for Biden and others warning of apocalypse under a Biden admin. It's scary and sickening just to look at a handful of titles. But nobody gives a shit!

I've tried bringing the Kelly video to the attention of Chris Cuomo and Donie O'Sullivan of CNN and even the FBI. Nothing works. YouTube won't take the video down, much less the channel. Nobody mentions the role of the reactionary Catholic media in the current mess. I'm terribly frustrated.

    End of rant

    1. I suppose they are leery of being accused of being anti-Catholic. The Know-Nothings were a long time ago, but they have not been forgotten. And the more recent work of "conservatives" to specially privilege their approved religions is another big problem. When government and religion get mixed up, it ultimately isn't good for either one; but many people can't see past their noses. Like the business "leaders" who can't see past the end of the next quarter. Sorry I can't be of any actual help, but I certainly empathize.

    2. Thanks, Alan.

Somebody mentioned the Know Nothings on CNN recently... Don't remember who. But seems to me he said Trump is in the direct line from that movement.

    3. I was struck by Trump's response when asked recently about QAnon: "I know nothing." That is exactly the canned response that gave the "Know Nothings" (more properly the American Party) their popular name.

  7. Biden to speak to the nation momentarily, on all major networks and CNN.

    Bernie is on Colbert tonight.

  9. Anderson Cooper just showed video of various Right Wingnuts spouting hatred to crowds and igniting violence.

Then he looked at the camera and said, "Feeling united yet?"

    1. They don't want unity. They just want us to surrender. That is NOT going to happen.

  12. I was going to watch Biden's speech, but when I looked it up on YouTube it looked like it was more than two hours long. I will wait for the summaries tomorrow. I gather that Bernie on Colbert isn't until rather late, so will check up on that tomorrow as well.
