It's Baking Day!

These are the treats I made for our family this year, since we can't be together.  Brownies and Rugelach (Walnut Horns).  I made tins of these, mailed one to family in Maine and we no-contact, doorstep-delivered them to the two households in Vermont that have grands.  We have one more to take to Root*Center*Son's house tomorrow.

But first! Today is Pie Baking Day!  Since there will be just three of us on Thanksgiving Day, I am making a Pumpkin Pie and will attempt to make a half-Apple, half Cherry Pie as well.

Today is also my one and only Daughter's 44th Birthday! 💖

  1. Listener, my sympathies on the accidental deletion. Sounds like something I would do.

    MOM UPDATE:
Quiet night. She seems much more comfortable in the hospital bed. Her kitty, Cecilia, eventually mustered the courage to venture downstairs to find her, so both Mom and Cecilia are now much happier. Last evening and this morning she was very insistent that she wanted records, not CDs, LPs. She no longer understands about CDs. Sis found a portable record player and we collected some of her massive LP collection. So this morning Sis has been sitting with her turning over and changing records every fifteen minutes, something she is not used to, being a child of the CD era. Maybe we can find a record changer/stack-o-matic. But at least Mom's much calmer with the music. Ate some breakfast and had her coffee frappe before I came upstairs.

    A note on me:
Since the election earlier this month I've been listening to CNN over Sirius XM radio. They have different commercials than on the TV - some pretty sleazy commercials too! One that is maybe not so sleazy is Larry King advertising something called Omega XL, which purportedly reduces inflammation and the joint and muscle pain it causes. Lately I've been taking turmeric which helped a lot, till I ran out and bought a different brand, which isn't helping at all. What the heck? Larry wouldn't advertise a scam, right? (:P) Hey, if it helps, it helps. If it doesn't, well, it was more expensive than I expected but I've spent more on useless junk in the past.

    1. Good news about your mom. Hope it continues.

I tend to be more than a bit skeptical about dietary supplements. But my evidence-based doctor recommended glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate for my knew osteoarthritis. "I don't know why it works, but it seems to," he said. And he was right. It makes absolutely no biological sense, but my osteoarthritis has gotten no worse over the past dozen or more years.

  3. Since 2020 is determined the win the title of "The Year of Hell" (it's winning). I got a phone call yesterday that my younger brother has lung cancer. Today he is also going for a stress test for his heart. I haven't seen him since May but he was very frail and having trouble breathing then. This all just sucks. I'm just numb.

    1. Biography of Robert Emmett McDowell [Click] (Wikipedia doesn’t have an entry for him.) McDowell sought to entertain. Guess I will charge up my old Kindle. . . don’t find it immediately but will keep an eye out. IN the meantime I can use my MacBook or iMac, or I could fire up my backup Kindle, which I have never used, although I think I updated the software. Thanks for the tip, Cat.

    2. Hmph. I found the charger for my old Kindle in my suitcase, but not the Kindle itself. Oh, well. I am reading the story on my MacBook Air. Which I really MUST back up some day.

    3. Yes indeed, good fun. Although it is ridiculously sexist, it does rather draw one in, doesn't it? Not unlike Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series. BTW, I just discovered that while the first five Barsoom novels' copyrights are expired in the US, the whole series is available from Gutenberg Australia.

  6. I went to the grocery store today to get a couple of last-minute things for Thanksgiving dinner prep, including a single-use aluminum roasting pan. I have put one inside the regular roasting pan for years and years, to make cleanup easy. But the prices are WAY up this year--I will just use aluminum foil. I wonder if this is another present from Our Illustrious Leader, who imposed tariffs on aluminum imports.

  7. VT cases: 3827-3762=65*
    1379 active cases
    64 deaths(2 days)
    Recovered 2384(+45)
    Hospital 20(+3) ICU 5(+3)
    Tests 218,607 (+1906)

    * +16 +65
Today’s official total is 81 new cases, but the math says 65.
I do wish someone would explain this.

    1. I for sure don't know, but one possible explanation is that the beginning and end of the time period used to calculate "daily new cases" does not correspond to the cutoff time for posting totals.
