    1. That reminds me of the science of yoga by I.K. Taimni, which I have read several times, but not recently. The medieval machine : the industrial revolution of the Middle Ages by Jean Gimpel remains a favorite read after many years, in no small part because it debunks the conventional story of the origin of the Renaissance.

    2. I still own, but haven't read since college, a book on medieval technology. Remember enjoying it but don't recall the title. The medieval bookshelves are on the other side of the room and I'm too lazy, er, tired to haul my arss all the way over there and look for it. But, I don't think it's the one you mentioned, Alan. I'll try to remember to look for it tomorrow.

    3. Very intriguing, Cat! Check out Diarmaid O'Murchu. He's a monk, but he gets in trouble all the time for having views that the Catholic Church doesn't sanction. And I love that. Ha!

  3. Nate Silver makes sense of the polls. [Click] Most Dems are considering more than more than one candidate; only 8% each have settled on Bernie or Biden. That makes perfect sense this early.

It’s not just Biden; other candidates have unattributed quotations on their web sites [Click] and have voted for the Hyde Amendment [Click] (presumably as a trade for something else they actively supported)

Stacey Abrams? [Click] “Now, though she may not be running for president, Abrams is keeping a presidential-campaign level schedule…Wherever she goes the political reality is this: whether or not she runs, Stacey Abrams is already influencing the presidential race.”

African Swine Fever spreads. [Click] “Biggest animal disease outbreak the planet has ever faced.”

    1. Thinking of the claim that african swine fever is the “Biggest animal disease outbreak the planet has ever faced,” it occurs to me to wonder if it rivals cattle plague, AKA rinderpest. [Click] I have my doubts.

  4. Bloomberg Promises $500 Million to Help End Coal [Click] Focus is on state and local governments. Bloombert already supports the [Click] Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Program, [Click] which focuses on local activism and has been very effective, although largely under the radar of coal promoters.
