Turkey Time!

After a hiatus, the flock of Wild Turkeys returned! Hurrah!
8 in all, including one small (half size) Turkey. The most we've seen at once is 10.

Is Bernie’s Long Game the Right Play for 2020? [Click]

I keep thinking about a couple of things I read in yesterday’s handicapping of the 2020 race. First that Bernie is an effective legislator who can and does work across the aisle. [Click] This link is from the NYT in 2016, but was being echoed yesterday.

Then there was Kate Aronoff’s opinion piece yesterday about Bernie being the real deal. [Click] One excerpt: “...while Sanders’s ideas won’t set him apart from this field as dramatically as they did in 2016, his authenticity still might. Harris, Gillibrand and Booker are all recent converts to big progressive policies. Sanders has been saying the same thing for 40 years... That he is constitutionally incapable of lying has been a major part of his appeal, and a stark contrast from polished party functionaries willing to change their tune to suit a new poll or donor. The onus will be on candidates newly gravitating toward left ideas to prove their endorsements of progressive policies are more than just empty talking points."

    1. That last point is exactly why I support, admire and enjoy listening to him.

    1. I was reveling in reading about the Giant Tortoise, until I came to this line:

"The team took the tortoise, which is probably more than 100 years old, to a breeding centre for giant tortoises on Santa Cruz Island, where it will stay in a specially designed pen."

Seriously?! They found a Tortoise alive and well on the Galapagos, with evidence of possibly others as well, and THEY MOVED IT... to a PEN...?!!! I could just scream.

    2. The pen might well be to protect the tortoise, its eggs and young from rats and feral livestock (e.g. pigs). Remember that the California Condor, for one, was saved by a captive breeding program.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson imposed a full gag order after Roger Stone posted photo on Instagram of judge with what appeared to be crosshairs of gun.
Said Jackson: “So no, Mr Stone, I’m not giving you another chance. I have serious doubts about whether you’ve learned any lesson at all.”
She added: “Any violation of this order will be a basis for revoking your bond.”

    Very generous IMO.

Politico: “Of course, every state is in better economic shape than it was during the Great Recession, but California has enjoyed its renaissance while pursuing policies Republicans associate with economic ruin. It has an $11-an-hour minimum wage, scheduled to rise to $15 by 2023. Its unusually aggressive implementation of Obamacare since 2013 has reduced its uninsured rate from 17 percent to just 7 percent.”

“Its ambitious clean energy and climate policies in many ways inspired the Green New Deal; the state is committed to generating 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 100 percent by 2045, and its stringent fuel-efficiency standards help explain why it’s home to half the nation’s electric vehicles. In general, California is flourishing while pursuing the exact opposite of the policies Trump is pursuing in Washington.”

  6. I don't know if anybody else saw something similar, but here is the announcement about presidential debates that went to people associated with the DNC's Disability Caucus:
The DNC announced that our first Democratic presidential primary debate in June 2019 will be hosted by NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo. In 2018 voters with disabilities and our allies were essential partners to fighting voter suppression in Georgia and Florida, and turned out for successful candidate who supported platforms to break our barriers. Disabled voters are a critical constituency and the road to the White House runs through our community starting with the 2020 Democratic Presidential Debates.
    • Media Partners. The first debate will be broadcast simultaneously on all three networks, with real-time Spanish translations on Telemundo, in primetime on back-to-back weeknights. The second debate will air on CNN in July. The first two debates will also be streamed online for free, so folks without cable will have a lot of options. Location, venue, moderators, dates and time, format and logistics of the first and second debates will be announced at a later date. Both agreements are unprecedented. Share on Twitter
    • Stage & Threshold for Participation. For the first two debates, we’re introducing a new metric - grassroots fundraising - to accompany a traditional polling requirement. To meet our polling threshold, a candidate must reach at least 1% support in at least three reputable polls. To meet the grassroots fundraising threshold, a candidate must receive donations from 65,000 unique donors, with at least 200 unique donors per state in a minimum of 20 states. 1. Consider the source, listener: NewsMax = clickbait. They say this that and the other thing have been linked to Parkinson's by research, which means nothing. For instance, there is a slightly higher than average rate of Parkinson's around here, and also higher than average pesticide exposure, which was investigated. They found no statistical association between pesticide exposure and Parkinson's, much less any cause and effect relationship. But I am sure NewsMax would call that research linking Parkinson's to pesticide exposure. They do say that nobody knows what causes it, and that is the single most important part of the article. A couple of days back I posted a link (I will see if I can find it) to promising research on a drug designed to restore neurons that have decayed, causing cognitive decline (both normal age-associated and Altzheimer's) in mice, that will be proceeding to human trials. I don't recall if they said anything about Parkinson's, but think they may well have.

    2. New drug raises hopes of reversing memory loss in old age [Click] Oh, that’s GABA; Parkinson’s has to do with DOPA. Horses of different colors. But some similar approach might help, some day. The alleged protective effect of smoking is probably just a matter of nicotine suppressing symptoms--one of the drugs given for treatment of PD is a mild central nervous system stimulant, like nicotine.

  10. Well, I have now driven four Mini Coopers.

I bought the first Mini, a 2003, used, in 2006. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it! It was a two door Mini Cooper in metallic gold with a black roof. I wanted that car so badly that I learned again how to drive a standard. We got checkered-flag side mirror covers to spiff it up. Very cool. The grands called them "soccer balls."

I bought the second one, new, in 2009, when the transmission went on the first one. This Mini was medium blue with a black roof and the signature "soccer balls." It also had a moonroof! Eventually that transmission went too.

So the third Mini, 2013, was a leased car, because they didn't seem to last many years. This one was ice blue with a white roof and the moon roof came with pull-across screens. Nifty! It looked great with the black and white "soccer balls." Only, that car's axle broke as I pulled out into traffic!! They fixed it and I kept it the full three years.

The fourth Mini, 2016, also leased, was a FOUR door Mini Cooper in red with black roof. Four doors became vital because the grands were only getting bigger. It looked so very cool with the black and white checkered-flag "soccer ball" mirror covers that I named the car "Checkers."

Well, the three years on the lease are up. I test drove a Honda Fit, but just could not get interested in it, because the way the frame is made, with the long sloping front (similar to a Prius), it made a terrible blind spot that really bothered me. SO! Today we bought my 3 year old Mini!! It's still under 36,000 miles and we'll own it in three years. We got an extended service contract, too, and the original warranty goes another year. It will be good to have some equity this time because in about four years we hope to get an EV.

I got the car washed on the way home, to celebrate. ❤️🚗 I love my Mighty Mini!!
