  1. Wisconsin Gov. Evers Will Ignore Lame Duck Legislation [Click] Excellent tactic, methinks!

Historical note: Nancy Pelosi is the first Speaker of the House to regain the gavel since Sam Rayburn in 1955. (That was the second time for Rayburn.)

  2. Possibly credible rumors that Mueller may submit his report [summary] to the DOJ as early as mid-February. [Click] It seems to me that if past is prologue, that means there will be further indictments before that. And remember that Mueller could get the information in the full report into the court system (where the Administration could not conceal it) via a grand jury.

P.S.: At least a couple of the political news sites I frequent are very slow to load this morning; overwhelmed with Internet traffic, mayhap?

  4. As I was taking a shower this evening, I found myself humming and whistling Red Wing[Click], but darned if I could recall the words. Consequently I looked it up on Wikipedia, had my recollection refreshed, and discovered—I had never thought about it—that Woody Guthrie’s
song Union Maid[Click] is set to the same tune! Of course! But I had just never thought about it. And as it happens, the tune comes originally from Robert Schumann!

  5. We are marking the change of power in DC by watching the movie Day After Tomorrow on AMC. I never watch commercials, but the person who did product placement deserves a commendation. For example: Just after the huge ship slides into NYC, the show breaks to a commercial that begins "Expect the unexpected." LOL! Then we're watching the part where the Administration is trying to figure out what to do and the scientist tells them they have to evacuate the southern half of the country before it's too late. It's already too late for the northern half, so they have to shelter in place. The best part is where the Mexican Gov't closes the border! There is something weirdly comforting in watching this movie. And I think I couldn't have watched it again before today. The last time I watched this movie, we didn't have an Arctic researcher in the family. We do now. Probably a good thing. 😉

    1. It's also interesting to see the part where the VP says the scientist should stick to science and let them make the decisions, and the scientist says they wouldn't be in this situation if they had listened to the scientists sooner. YEAH!

Again!! (spoiler alert) Just after the Dad makes it to the Library and hugs his kid, they break to a commercial which begins, "As a parent, nothing is more important than your children." 😂

High five for the person who placed the commercials! They're the comic relief!

I'd forgotten it ends (spoiler alert) with the VP turned President giving the first radio address from ... Mexico. And now we see what it might take to humble a conservative climate denier. Hmmm.

Hahaaa! Last commercial begins: "Adios Amigo!" ROFL!! 😂😂😂

  6. A Weirdly Quiet White House [Click] “It has been more than a month since Trump even played golf, the longest stretch of his presidency.” Why, the poor fellow! I know just how that is.

This is the best bit in this tranche of links:

John Cassidy in The New Yorker: Don’t Underestimate Elizabeth Warren and Her Populist Message[Click] “…Ever since Trump launched his 2016 Presidential bid, she has been mocking him…” Hoo, Boy—some choice stuff! A very thoughtful opinion piece.

  7. Tonight a woman is again third in line to the Presidency. And the first two are on thin ice.

  8. I have had it in mind for some time to watch rat[Click] again. Maybe I will tonight. I got the data reduction done for what should be my last scientific publication--about two thousand data points entered, the same number calculated by formulae in the spreadsheet. Now to splice in the text.

    1. I changed my mind. I shall peruse the Dick Blick art supplies Winter sale catalogue, nibble on a mixture of walnuts and raisins, work on a cup of decaf, and continue re-reading after some years Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover: First Contact.

Still no response to my inquiry about donating, so I will go ahead and send a little love, but will not make it automatic every month, so if I have a federal contract for expert services, I can refrain during that period. Then on to the Darkover novel.
