Brutal. I would do what they do in Japan, where central air conditioning (and heating) are the province of the wealthy. Air-condition a single room, and pretty much live there when it is hot. Often the room is next to the kitchen and has the TV as well as a table and seating. Like what people here so often did in the old days--use the kitchen stove to provide heat, and mostly hang out around the kitchen table during cool or cold weather; there would be doors to the rest of the house that could be closed. Of course the old wood stoves put out a lot of heat; that's why those who could would have a summer kitchen outdoors. You can buy Japanese-made room air conditioners here these days--they're very good; the cooling part (with fan and moving louvers) mounts inside the room (usually next to the ceiling); the rest is outside the house--two pieces. Much better (quiet for one thing) than the typical single-unit US room air conditioners that mount in a window). They had one in the lab of the rural hospital where I used do work, to make up for the extra heat from the refrigerators and instruments, which the hospital air conditioning couldn't handle; it used zero floor space.

P.S.: Google: ductless air conditioner Or click here Can be operated as a heat pump, which I suppose would be more efficient.
I wish!! Wil is not a fan of air conditioners. We have a long term plan to get a heat pump, but don't have funds for that this year. One tactic is to place a bowl of ice in front of a fan to cool the moving air. I do have some O2Cool fans that Susan sent me a few years back. They are battery operated and can go wherever I go! I LOVE THAT!!!

DeleteIs there an ice plant (or ice house!) in the area that will deliver a block of ice to you, like the old days?

The Supreme Court has ruled to uphold DT's Travel Ban.
ReplyDeleteCongress could overturn it. If only they would. One more reason to rock the vote in November!
