    1. Considering how liberal Vermont is with respect to carrying firearms makes the new laws all the more impressive.

    1. It was rainy and windy last night, and there was some desultory snow and, later in the afternoon, some more determined wind. But overall, Springfield, or at the very least my neighborhood of Forest Park, got off lightly indeed. I saw scary footage of Boston and the news reports said the storm was affecting the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to North Carolina. Not for the first time, I'm thankful to be in the Pioneer Valley.

  6. This afternoon I picked up The Autobiography of Malcolm X again after several months. He was an amazing man and incredibly intelligent. Just think what he could have done if that stupid, bigoted eighth grade teacher had encouraged him to go to law school, rather than telling him that, because he was black, he should become a carpenter. I simply can't get my mind around any teacher saying that to any child, especially the top of his class, in the early 1940s.

    1. Can't say as I know all that much about Malcolm X, but he certainly does seem at a minimum to have been a very interesting person. He probably gets short shrift (if any mention at all) in high school US history classes, but the same can be said of so many people and things.
