Wear Orange

Today is the day to wear orange to show support for taking action against Gun Violence. It doesn't only need to be today, of course, but this day is highlighted because it's the birthday of 15- year old Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot and killed in a Chicago park near her high school a week after attending President Obama's inauguration.

  1. Alan! I saw Fresno broke a temperature record, hitting 105F this week! Wow!! Yikes!! I'll stop moaning about brushing 90F now.

  2. Oh, but it's a DRY heat! (So is a blast furnace...) It does get to be a real drag when it is over a hundred degrees for a week or more. But we don't get any winter to speak of, compared to Vermont. No need for a skimobile to get to work.

Field Poll [Click] Shows tight race in California Democratic primary, Central Valley polling is flagged as a small sample. Twelve percent (!) undecided; subgroup turnouts predicted to be unusually important. The Field Poll is far and away the most reliable poll in California. Lots of detail given.

As of 0745 hrs Thursday, no word on when or where HRC will appear in Fresno. I anticipate, but do not know, that her appearance will be a flop compared to both Bernie and Frankentrump, which throws the Field Poll into a bit of doubt.

  3. Heat/humidity. . . . I was home (Salt Lake City) about 1975, and it was hot. Everyone weeping and complaining. My body, long used to Maryland/DC temps, told me it was about 90º. In the event it was 115º--the hottest day since the Mormons had arrived in 1847. . . .

    1. LOL Puddle. I do not miss DC/Northern Virginia summers! Can very easily understand why the lack of humidity translated to a lower, and familiar, temperature to your body.

  4. Perspective: Friends in Peace Corps in Thailand are experiencing 115 and it's the rainy season. No A/C. Ovens and stoves are actually outside on one's open porch.

  5. Is it just me, or are the wheels coming off HRC’s campaign? She can’t decide whether to duel with Trump or Bernie, can’t decide whether to campaign in New Jersey or California, can’t (so far) set up a rally in Fresno (maybe she can line up an air-conditioned elementary school multipurpose room), and today gave a “major foreign policy address” in San Diego. Since when are US Presidential elections won with foreign policy positions? Oh, and her aide who helped to set up her private e-mail server is taking the 5th again. I see that Bernie is having a rally in Modesto today—where else I haven’t checked, but he is up and down the state, running circles around HRC and addressing things that directly affect people’s daily lives. A couple of excerpts from politicalwire.com follow.

A new Gallup survey finds a majority think that Donald Trump as better able to handle the economy than Hillary Clinton, 53% to 43%.
Trump also leads on being best able to handle terrorism and national security, 50% to 46%.

Trump Keeps Winning the News Cycle
“Clinton, by contrast, does not win many news cycles. Her most notable days are those when negative events spin beyond her control–when the State Department’s inspector general scolds her for cutting corners with her emails; when Bernie Sanders or his supporters do violence to her sense of inevitability. This is rightly seen as a problem for her; Trump is always on the offensive, in every sense of the word.”

    1. I like that last half-sentence.

    2. Those poll numbers are positively frightening! For Trump to be seen as better or stronger than *anyone* on *anything* should ring very loud alarm bells.

Not sure about your dismissal of foreign policy, Alan. It is at least as important as domestic policy. Indeed, in today's world, the two are, it seems to me, pretty tightly entwined. For instance, repatriating good jobs from the likes of Mexico and China entails a whole lot more than domestic policy.

At the risk of sounding snide, since when were elections won or lost on speeches made in San Diego?

  6. Oh, I forgot—after conventional wisdom for months and months being that the only way HRC could beat Trump was to increase his negatives, yesterday it was being said that since she couldn’t really make them any worse, she would be trying to increase her positives. Then today she bashes him again. And BTW, Sanders picks up more superdelegates [Click]

  8. From Politico's FB page:

Jerry Brown's tepid endorsement of Hillary Clinton has only one message: Stop Trump. It’s resonating.

Oh, Jerry, how could you? This very nearly brought me to tears.

  9. I do not own a single piece of orange clothing, nor one with orange on it. One T-shirt for Glass Hammer, my favorite Progressive Rock band, includes a splash of what might charitably be called burnt sienna, but that's it. I don't like orange.

On the other hand, I see that the White House's FB profile pic, which usually as a green background, has an orange one today. Thanks to Listener for cluing us in. Otherwise, I'd have had no idear whatsoever what that was all about.

  10. On Facebook where I've variously been called "a lo IQ democrate (sic)" weak-minded, a fool, etc. Every Hillary supporter seems to lean on the fact that she's not Trump and Trump is so, so scary. They keep trying to say that if the GOP turned their guns on Bernie they would destroy him. I say Bernie would eat the GOP's lunch. But the main thing that is overwhelming to me is that too many people seem to be voting either out of anger and hatred (Trump) or terror and anxiety (Hillary). Trump is everywhere, as our media is picking our next President, Bernie is running everywhere and working all the time and Hillary is pretty much invisible.

Still no mention of a venue for HRC in Fresno this weekend; one statement that it is expected Saturday night. Another small, invitation-only private event rather than a rally? That would look bad compared to both Trump and Sanders, but would be consistent with previous behavior. HRC doesn't do crowds. What Susan said.

  12. (KMJ Radio) – "Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton will make a campaign stop in Fresno on Saturday, it has been confirmed.

The regional director for the California Democratic Party confirms that the specific timing and location of Clinton’s visit are still being arranged."
