Yes, I'll be joining a Bernie watch party tonight. I don't recall any of the Dean house parties being in conjunction with a TV debate. In fact, I don't recall seeing any of the debates at all.
I was just joking a bit about the maple syrup, because (surely for comic effect) the cartoon character is pouring it straight onto the turkey. I should think it might, if diluted a bit with one thing or another, make a nice glaze. I just oil the turkey, sprinkle it with plenty of poultry seasoning, roast it under a tinfoil tent and baste it as the juices cook out of it--salty and savory rather than sweet. I could well imagine maple syrup and vinegar making the basis of a good marinade. And October is a better time for Thanksgiving, certainly!
At work I have two writing positions. One, standing at the workbench, initialing specimens as I sample them, and also writing a list of said samples. Standing, the only way I can brace my hand is on the heel of said hand, which dictates finger writing. Later on I am seated at a desk (so arm writing works) writing calculations on computer printouts, then transferring that and the information from the previous list to a detailed log sheet printed on both sides. (Old fashioned, but reliable.) So far, writing on standard copy paper. Then the results get written on a card which is far less absorbent then the copy paper. Finding a good balance between the two types of paper and a single pen may not be possible, but I will see what transpires with the pens arriving this week (maybe tomorrow). E-mail me your mailing address, listener, and I will send you samples of the several types of inexpensive pens I am experimenting with, on various types of paper--Platinum and Pilot models.
So I'm back from the Bernie watch party. Chafee was the one who rose in my estimation. I'm now inclined to think I might put him second on my list. Bernie and Hilary both did well, as expected. I thought O'Malley had a strong closing statement, but otherwise he didn't particularly impress. And Webb isn't my guy.
The party was in a retirement apartment complex with the large majority of attendees appearing to be residents. Because the debate ran so long there was very little interaction among the attendees -- in fact, many if not most left before the debate was over. Which means that the idea people were supposed to sign up to work for Bernie didn't work out.
We watched from home and missed some of the opening statements, so I will want to go back and read those. But I too thought that both Bernie and Hillary held their own well. Webb is not my guy either. I was more impressed with O'Malley than Chafee, but I can't really say why. It wasn't on TV here, as we don't get a CNN channel, so had to live stream it on my Mac. There was a place to vote for who "won" the debate and Bernie got 75% of that vote, vs 18% for Hillary and less for the others. That may be a factor of the organised Bernie watch parties, but it speaks well for Bernie's social media presence. I thought Hillary had good poise, but she didn't impress me with her facts and accomplishments. Bernie did better as the debate progressed and really shined in places. So I am satisfied. I am interested to see the debate that Rachel Maddow moderates. Anderson Cooper did pretty well, given that most debate moderators aren't able to keep a lid on comment length. A lot got discussed for the amount of time.
One thing that struck me was that the way the questions were framed seemed designed more to set the candidates against each other than to explore the issues. But the candidates didn't entirely fall for the ploy. I think Bernie's response about the emails was especially goo.
Who is having a debate watch party?
ReplyDeleteDo you remember who you watched the Dem debates with when Dean was running?
We just watched from our living room and did not join or have a party.

Notes on the last thread, Alan.

Thanks, Alan! Keep me posted on the paper and ink combos that work. You might want to teach a community course on this sometime!
DeleteGood point, Bill.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I remember the debates either.

What are others' thoughts?

ReplyDeleteI agree about Bernie's comment, Bill. Even Hillary smiled and shook his hand. A reviewer I read afterwards said that the handshake helped Bernie more than it helped Hillary.
