  2. Well, we've made it to -20F, and the night is young. We are 14 degrees lower than predicted, and the coldest time isn't supposed to be until 7am.
Hoping the birds and beasts are okay.

    1. I went outside about an hour ago to fill the feeder (which the birds emptied in a day) and scatter some seed. The creatures will be in great need come dawn.

  3. We bottomed out at -22F last night, which is balmy compared with some folks on the NY side of Lake Champlain, who endured -36F. So glad for a stay-at-home day today!

  4. Hi guys,

It’s sunny and clear here, but cold; currently 16° F.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. I’m up to A Storm of Swords, the third volume of A Song of Ice and Fire. I’ve read The Prisoner of Zenda. Donno how I missed this one in my young days, it’s a rip-roaring good yarn. Also read the latest Georgianna Rannoch book. Mostly though I’ve been rereading some of my Science books, researching a quiz. My current state in Adventures in Authoring requires – wwell, let me show you the instructions:

    “The Elevator Reaches the Bottom

The elevator heads downward before a final *CLUNK*. You've reached the bottom of the shaft. The doors, however, don't open.

A panel on the wall of the cabin lights up and, along with it, instructions.

To exit this elevator you will need to complete a quiz. The submission must utilize a title from the Authors Challenges listing. In addition, it must be placed into the Hobbies, People, Sports, or Sci/Tech category.

Things seem to be getting a bit more restrictive. Who knows-- maybe these categories aren't your strong suit? And the importance of picking a good title to fit the category only makes it more complicated. To escape this challenge unscathed you'll need to find a balance between a good (and perhaps lucky) title and one of hundreds of different possible subcategories to work with. Remember to review your guidelines before submitting! Many subcategories within these sections are very popular; make sure to play through some of the quizzes in the section in which you're looking to write to ensure that you avoid duplicates as best as possible.”

EEK! I’m claustrophobic! Working as hard and fast as possible to keep my mind off being trapped in a small elevator cabin, somewhere in the bowels of Quizzyland. Needless to say, Sci/Tech is the only category I have any hope of writing a quiz in, however remote that hope. Choosing a title from the Authors Challenges list wasn’t easy either, but finally I settled on “Required Reading.” Here’s my intro:

“I’m an English major, useless at Math more complicated than balancing my checkbook. Still, I love Physics, Astronomy, Cosmology and quantum Mechanics, reading all the popular books on them I can find. Here are some highlights from my bookshelf.”

I’m doing well, with seven of the ten questions either laid out or completely finished, though I did cheat just a bit. One question involves At The Earth’s Core, the first book in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Pellucidar series, which I use to ask about the Hollow Earth Hypothesis. Actually, the Hollow Earth Hypothesis is quite interesting. It seems that John Quncy Adams proposed funding an expedition to search for the entrance into the Earth at the North Poll (the entrances being thought to lie at the two polls). But government sponsorship of scientific endeavors being what it is, Jefferson canceled the project when he came into office.

Anyway, all this reading is a good thing. I’m not feeling too perky (no doubt due to being stuck in this elevator!), and it’s helpful to keep my mind engaged.

  5. While rooting about in a drawer, I came across a bumper sticker that must be a JC design:

    I'll Hug Your Elephant
    If You'll Kiss My Ass

Seems to me Mum wouldn't let me put it on the car that I technically own, though she drives it. Can't imagine why. LOL I think it's a perfectly splendid bumper sticker.

Sadly, I never did find what I was looking for, a pair of fingerless gloves. Could have sworn they were in that drawer... Guess not.

    1. One of my favorite stickers of all time. I did put it on the tailgate of my pickup truck, and I meant it.

    2. Ooohhh, if you want some fingerless gloves I'll mail you some pronto! They were rehomed to me by a relative, but I really won't wear them. Interested??

    3. "to ensure that you avoid duplicates as best as possible.”

That's improper English; it should read "as much as possible” or "as well as possible.”

    4. LOL You'd be surprised at some of the errors, typos and such that sometimes appear in Quizzyland. My editor friend Agony is a stickler, but many if not most editors are less careful. One finds repeated and misplaced words as well as downright incorrect grammar. I find myself just shrugging and moving on. Once in a while, though, I do correct typos. Recently, I sent a message, "Vernice = Venice" and another, "Gibert =Gilbert." In both cases, the word was correctly spelled in the Interesting Info section but misspelled in the list of possible answers. Rather disconcerting.

  6. We seem to be running at about the same temp as last night, or a bit colder. Presently -18.4F.

  7. Just wanted to say hi! right now. Got home from Arisia (Boston science fiction convention) a bit after noon. Only bummer on the trip was that the Amtrak sleeper from Boston got cancelled due to mechanical problems and I had to ride coach all the way.

Temperature here a "balmy" (by comparison) 1F.

    More tomorrow.
